On their weekend off within the unit's compound, under the guidance of Captain Cao Van Thuong, Political Officer of Company 5, Battalion 5 (Regiment 5, Division 5, Military Region 7), the soldiers read books and newspapers while chatting and sharing stories in a friendly, green environment.
The books are abundant and diverse, ranging from politics, history, traditions, and law to life skills, science, and technology, meeting the needs and interests of each soldier. This activity has been maintained as a regular practice in many companies and platoons, making reading a regular part of their lives.

Recognizing the crucial role of books in educating and training soldiers, the Party Committee and command of the 5th Division have consistently focused on leading and directing the development of a system of cultural institutions to support reading activities.
The Ho Chi Minh Room, library, law book collection, youth book collection, and field newspaper box of the units have been strengthened and supplemented with books suitable for soldiers. Not stopping at investing in physical facilities, the units focus on innovating organizational methods and maintaining the habit of reading books and newspapers.
Reading activities are flexibly integrated into political, cultural, and spiritual activities, Party branch meetings, and youth union activities, thereby creating conditions for officers and soldiers to access knowledge naturally and effectively.

Corporal Do Huy Truong, a soldier in Company 5, Battalion 5 (Regiment 5), expressed: “Previously, I rarely read books, but since joining the unit, with guidance from officers and introductions to many good books, I realize that reading helps me better understand the traditions of the Army, the duties of soldiers, scientific and technical knowledge, and discern right from wrong, thereby creating more motivation for me to strive in my studies and training.”
According to Colonel Tran Hoang Giang, Secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of the 5th Division, the core element in spreading the reading culture is the Division's promotion of the exemplary role of its officers at all levels. From commanding officers to platoon leaders, many comrades maintain the habit of reading official books and newspapers and directly guide and introduce books to soldiers.”

Attending meetings at various units, we witnessed officers not only encouraging soldiers to read, but also sharing the content and meaning of books relevant to their work, training, combat readiness, and disciplinary development. This approach helps soldiers understand that reading is not a mere formality, but a self-driven need to improve their character, enhance their knowledge, and strengthen their resolve.
First Lieutenant Nguyen Minh Khang, Political Officer of Company 3, Battalion 4 (Regiment 5), said: “Every day, I have a book I love by my bedside to read during breaks. After reading, I often discuss and share the interesting content with the soldiers and guide them to make reading a practical daily need, thereby forming a reading habit among the soldiers.”

Along with maintaining a reading habit, units within the division have actively innovated the methods of disseminating and introducing books.
Many activities such as book presentation contests, storytelling based on books, creating wall newspapers, writing reflections after reading, and themed book exhibitions on major holidays and anniversaries were organized enthusiastically, attracting a large number of officers and soldiers to participate.
Through these activities, each book is not just for reading, but is also exchanged, discussed, and related to practical situations, contributing to improving the effectiveness of political and ideological education.
In particular, in the context of today's information explosion, guiding soldiers to read official books and newspapers is even more important, helping to enhance their "resistance" to false and hostile narratives, especially in cyberspace.

Colonel Tran Hoang Giang emphasized: "Building a reading culture is an important aspect of creating a cultural environment within the unit. Through books, soldiers are nurtured with revolutionary ideals, their faith is strengthened, their level of awareness is enhanced, helping officers and soldiers to better understand their duties, strictly adhere to discipline, and be proactive and creative in training and work."
Corporal Tran Dang Khoi, a soldier in Company 3, Battalion 4 (Regiment 5), shared: "Thanks to reading books about the unit's history and traditions, I feel more proud and apply much of the knowledge to my studies and training, building my character, improving my skills, successfully completing all tasks, and strictly adhering to discipline."
Despite positive results, the development of a reading culture still faces limitations, such as the lack of sustainable reading habits, especially among young soldiers; reading activities in some units are merely a trend; the impact of modern media, especially social networks and electronic devices, reduces the appeal of printed books; and guidance in some units is not truly effective.
To address these issues, in the coming period, the 5th Division will strengthen the leadership and guidance of Party committees and commanders at all levels, identifying the development of a reading culture as a regular and long-term task in political and ideological education. At the same time, it will promote the exemplary role of cadres, especially leading cadres, in reading, introducing, and spreading the value of books.
In addition, units continue to proactively diversify book sources and innovate the forms of organizing reading activities, combining individual reading and group activities. In particular, the unit focuses on guiding and managing the use of technological equipment, effectively utilizing e-books and official online newspapers, considering them as a positive supplementary channel for reading culture. The division strengthens inspections, organizes and launches many movements, and promptly commends and rewards, creating a positive reading culture in the lives of officers and soldiers.
