(VLO) According to the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the Mekong Delta needs to better implement environmental protection standards and regulations, strictly enforce laws, and closely monitor environmental pollution issues to promote investment attraction towards a green economy.

Negative areas of natural disasters

According to a survey conducted by VCCI in 2023, up to 72.4% of enterprises in the Mekong Delta are being negatively affected by natural disasters and climate change (CC).

At the same time, the Mekong Delta is also facing new development opportunities with Resolution No. 120/NQ-CP of 2017 of the Government on sustainable development of the Mekong Delta adapting to climate change and the Mekong Delta Regional Planning for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050 with a multi-sectoral integrated approach, with a "nature-friendly" development perspective, proactively adapting to climate change.

Therefore, improving the business environment associated with environmental protection in provinces and cities in the region is an important and urgent task to enhance resources for green economic growth and sustainable development.

Mr. Hoang Quang Phong - Vice President of VCCI, emphasized that in the context of the world facing many challenges regarding the environment and climate change, economic development associated with environmental protection has become an urgent requirement and an important task. Vietnam in general and the provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region are no exception to this trend.

The efforts to improve the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) and Provincial Green Index (PGI) implemented by VCCI and the support of the Mekong Delta provinces in recent times, recognizing the positive, timely and effective aspects of the government and departments, branches and localities of the provinces in enhancing the improvement of the investment and business environment, towards a green economy and sustainable development is an inevitable and irreversible trend.

For Vinh Long, in recent years, the province has made continuous efforts to improve its investment and business environment. According to the PCI report in 2023 by VCCI, although not in the top 30 leading provinces and cities nationwide, Vinh Long has made good improvements in component indicators compared to 2022.

In addition, according to the PGI index results in 2023, Vinh Long province ranked 10/63 provinces and cities nationwide; and ranked first among 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region.

Regarding the PGI index, Vinh Long, along with Da Nang and Hung Yen, are the provinces with 2 component indexes leading the top 5 nationwide.

Specifically: in terms of ranking, Vinh Long province has the component index "Minimizing pollution and natural disasters" with a score of 7.67, ranked 3rd nationwide (after Dong Thap and Nam Dinh provinces); the component index "Ensuring compliance with environmental standards" with a score of 6.42, ranked 5th nationwide (after Dong Nai, Quang Nam, Binh Thuan, Tra Vinh provinces). In terms of scores, out of 4 component indexes, Vinh Long province has improved 3 indexes to increase scores.

To achieve that result, according to Mr. Luong Trong Nghia - Deputy Director of the Department of Planning and Investment, Vinh Long has made efforts in directing and implementing tasks and solutions to improve the investment and business environment; improve environmental management activities and promote green growth. The province considers environmental quality an important factor, minimizing pollution and natural disasters.

In addition, better enforcement of environmental protection standards and regulations, and balancing economic development and environmental protection. Special attention should be paid to attracting responsible business investment projects…

Also according to Mr. Nghia, the planning of Vinh Long province for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, with the goal that by 2030, Vinh Long will be a high-tech, ecological agricultural province; one of the agricultural economic centers of the Mekong Delta.

At the same time, we encourage innovation in developing sustainable production and business activities, promote high-quality green investment, and ensure green and sustainable development for the locality," said Mr. Nghia.

VCCI Vice President Hoang Quang Phong emphasized that in order to improve the business environment associated with sustainable green economic development, the Mekong Delta provinces need to better implement environmental protection standards and regulations, strictly enforce laws, closely monitor environmental pollution and wastewater treatment from investment, construction to operation, but also avoid creating unnecessary burdens for businesses.

In particular, focusing on responsible business projects, economic development associated with environmental protection, communication and replication of effective examples of climate change response, innovative solutions, environmentally friendly technologies suitable for new trends, suitable for businesses in the region with connectivity, orientation and leadership from the government and relevant sectors, localities to create a spreading force to accompany the development with businesses...
