Greece, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, believes that its historical ties with the Arab world and Israel give it the ability to play a role as a peace broker.

“We are friends of Israel, strategic partners, and we try to be honest and open with them,” said Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, but he stressed that there had not been enough pressure to make Israel change course.

Greece condemned the Hamas attack on October 7 last year and called on Israel to stop its attacks on Gaza, which according to the Palestinian Authority have caused the deaths of more than 41,000 people.

Foreign Minister Gerapetritis stressed that the escalation on the Israeli-Lebanese border in recent days showed a collective international failure to prevent the conflict from spreading. He also warned of the risk of Lebanon becoming a fierce war zone that the international community could not cope with.

In addition, Greece is promoting a temporary project to bring wounded and traumatized children from the war in Gaza to the European Union. Greece could take in around 500 children under this plan.
