Furthermore, these systems were overwhelmed by drone and missile attacks throughout the more than six-month-long war against Hamas.
Here are some of Israel's multi-layered air defense systems:
The Arrow : This system, developed with the U.S., is designed to intercept long-range missiles, including the ballistic missiles that Iran said it launched Saturday night. The Arrow, which operates outside the atmosphere, has been used in the current conflict to intercept long-range missiles launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

David's Sling : Also developed in conjunction with the US, David's Sling aims to intercept medium-range missiles, such as those possessed by Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Patriot : This US-made system is the oldest unit in Israel's missile defense system – used in the First Gulf War in 1991 to intercept Scud missiles fired by then-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Patriot is now used to shoot down aircraft, including drones.

Iron Dome : This system, developed by Israel with US support, specializes in shooting down short-range missiles. It has intercepted thousands of missiles since being activated in the early 2000s – including thousands during the war against Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel claims a success rate of over 90%.

Iron Beam : This is an air defense system that Israel is developing to counter laser-based threats. Israel claims this system will be a game-changer because it is significantly cheaper to operate than existing systems. However, it is not yet operational.
