The coastal erosion control project along the Xuân Hội section in Nghi Xuân (Hà Tĩnh province) spans over 1.4 km with a total construction cost of nearly 15 billion VND. Due to the impact of Typhoon No. 4 , serious erosion has occurred, encroaching deep into the dike and causing anxiety for hundreds of households.
Video: More than 1.4 km of coastline in Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan district (Ha Tinh province) is severely eroded, encroaching on the dike and threatening the lives of hundreds of households.
The coastal dike in Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan district (Ha Tinh province), is approximately 2 km long and serves as a protective barrier for about 450 households in Tan Ninh Chau and Hoi Tien villages. This area is a "hot spot" for landslides during the rainy season, with the coastline eroding by an average of 5-10 meters annually.
To combat coastal erosion and protect the dike, the People's Committee of Nghi Xuan district has constructed a coastal erosion control project spanning over 1.4 km, with a total construction cost of nearly 15 billion VND.
Due to the impact of typhoon No. 4, which caused heavy rain and large waves, a stretch of coastline more than 1.4 km long through Tan Ninh Chau and Hoi Tien villages (Xuan Hoi commune) suffered serious erosion, leaving many households inside the dike living in constant anxiety and worry.
The section of sea dike passing through Tan Ninh Chau village is only about 10 meters from the landslide site, and the subsidence still shows signs of encroaching further inland.
Severe erosion along the coast of Xuan Hoi commune, Nghi Xuan district, is causing anxiety among local residents.
Mr. Phan Vinh Tuy, residing in Tan Ninh Chau village, Chau Hoi commune, said: "Even with just the impact of typhoon number 4, with winds of level 6 and 7, the erosion is already so significant. If a real typhoon hits, the erosion will extend even further inland. The people are very worried and feel uneasy about building houses or doing business."
According to local residents, the erosion is becoming increasingly serious. Ms. Vo Thi Loan, residing in Xuan Hoi commune, expressed her concern: “My house is only 30 meters from the sea dike. Every time we hear the sound of big waves crashing against the shore, my family loses sleep and appetite. With the rainy and stormy season approaching, we are always worried. We hope that the authorities will quickly come up with a plan to help the people.”
Mr. Phan Van Chau, residing in Tan Ninh Chau village, said: "At the beginning of this year's rainy season, the coastline eroded by about 30 meters, and after typhoon No. 4, it became even more serious. The local authorities have built a seawall, but the erosion is getting worse. During the rainy and stormy days, we can't sleep peacefully because we're afraid the waves will break the dike."
Despite the presence of erosion control barriers, the relentless waves continue to erode the coastline. The breakwater, recently constructed by a contractor, has already collapsed and fallen into the sea.
Every day, local people go to the beach to check on the erosion situation.
Speaking to a reporter from Dan Viet newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Hoi commune, said: "Due to the impact of typhoon No. 4, the coastline has experienced serious erosion. Currently, a breakwater more than 1km long has been completed, but the local authorities and people are still uneasy as erosion continues to occur frequently. The local government is currently proposing solutions to higher authorities to prevent erosion, especially during this rainy season."
