Among the Hanoi dishes he tasted in Da Nang, the Western visitor rated crab noodle soup as "the best breakfast," followed by sticky rice with shredded chicken and steamed rice rolls.
Evan El (from the US) has been living in Vietnam for over a year. He frequently shares videos on his personal YouTube channel showcasing his culinary experiences in various places he's visited, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang.
In a newly uploaded video, Evan introduces three signature Hanoi dishes that he had the opportunity to enjoy in Da Nang not long ago: banh cuon (steamed rice rolls), xoi xeo (sticky rice with shredded chicken), and bun rieu cua (crab noodle soup).
"Today, I'm going to try three Hanoi-style dishes that I consider to be some of the best breakfasts," Evan said.

The first dish the Western guest suggested trying was rice rolls (banh cuon). He commented that the dish was very delicious and reasonably priced, around 15,000 – 20,000 VND per serving.
"Steamed rice rolls are one of my favorite dishes ever," said the American tourist.

In his opinion, Vietnamese rice rolls come in a variety of variations, from fillings like minced meat and wood ear mushrooms to soft-boiled egg fillings… served with cinnamon pork sausage or grilled meat, fried onions, and a distinctive dipping sauce.
“The rice rolls are thinly made, soft, and quite light on the stomach. I can eat 5 or 6 plates like this at once. If you eat the rice rolls on their own, you won't taste anything other than the steamed rice flour, but when eaten with minced meat, wood ear mushrooms, and pork sausage, they taste delicious and flavorful,” Evan shared.

The next Hanoi-style dish that the Western visitor found delicious for breakfast was sticky rice with shredded chicken.
At a street food stall, he ordered a mixed sticky rice dish for 35,000 VND, which included ingredients such as finely grated mung beans, shredded pork floss, steamed pork sausage, Chinese sausage, soy sauce marinated eggs, fried onions, etc.
Male tourists rated this dish as quite affordable, with prices varying depending on the ingredients and portion size desired by the diner.

In terms of appearance, Evan commented that the mixed sticky rice dish was quite appealing, "basically looking like a packaged buffet at an affordable price."
In terms of flavor, he found the sticky rice to be soft and chewy, and it tasted great with savory dishes. Additionally, the restaurant added some unique ingredients like sweet and spicy sauces, soy-sauce marinated eggs, etc., to create diverse flavors that suit the preferences and tastes of the local people.
“This dish is fantastic for me. It has the perfect combination of soft, chewy sticky rice, finely grated mung beans, savory shredded pork floss, and crispy fried onions. It’s a great breakfast,” Evan shared.

Crab noodle soup (Bún riêu cua) was the final dish that the Western visitor rated as "the best Hanoi breakfast" and recommended that diners try.
He enjoyed a bowl of mixed crab noodle soup for 45,000 VND, served with ingredients such as beef, crab paste, fried tofu, pork sausage, and fish cake.
"The broth is delicious," Evan exclaimed after tasting it.

American tourists say that because bun rieu has a distinctive broth flavor, not all foreign visitors enjoy it.
However, in his personal opinion, he found this breakfast dish to be nutritious and flavorful thanks to the harmonious combination of different ingredients.
"It's hard to describe the sophisticated flavor of Hanoi's crab noodle soup. It's truly the best breakfast because it can give you enough energy to work for hours," he shared.
