Ba Quang Grass Hill - also known as Vinh Quy Grass Hill by locals, is located in Vinh Quy commune, about 70 km from Cao Bang center and more than 300 km from Hanoi .
Although the road here is not very convenient for those who are exploring the Northern mountains for the first time, Ba Quang still becomes an indispensable destination for the community of adventure travel enthusiasts.
What makes this place attractive is its pristine, rustic beauty, blended with the peaceful atmosphere typical of the border region.
The natural picture changes color with the seasons
From May to October, Ba Quang wears a green shirt that stretches endlessly. The soft grass slopes sway in the wind, creating gentle ripples. The higher you go, the darker the green becomes, glowing under the early morning sunlight.
This is also the most popular time for "cloud hunting." Many tourists choose to depart very early, when the sky is still covered in mist, to follow the trail to the top of the hill. When the sun appears behind the distant mountains, the sea of clouds floating in front of them seems to be covered in a layer of pure gold, turning the whole space into a rare, magical scene.
The hilltop area is wide and open, not blocked by large trees, providing an open view in all four directions. Just lift your camera up and you can easily get “million-like” frames, from the villages hidden at the foot of the mountain, the terraced fields connecting softly to the green mountains embracing the vast grassy plain below.
The harmonious combination of light, grass and sky makes Ba Quang an ideal place for both photographers and young people who love to check-in.
To have the most impressive moments, visitors should be present at the grass hill at two golden times, which are early morning and late afternoon.
Early morning is when clouds and dew still linger on the hillsides, creating a thin layer of mist that hovers like silver silk.
Late afternoon is when the sunset falls, the gentle sunlight dyes the grass golden, stretching the hillsides into soft strips curving along the mountainside.

Burning grass season - a typical golden picture of Ba Quang
Entering November, Ba Quang changes its appearance with the green grass turning into a brilliant orange-yellow color - a time many people call the burning grass season. In the early winter days, cold winds blow in, causing the grass to change color faster, covering the adjacent hillsides like a golden carpet stretching to the horizon. When the sun rises, the morning dew slowly melts away, revealing soft grass strands swaying gently in the wind, the light shining on them creates a shimmering effect like a moving layer of golden silk.
The grass burning season lasts from October to January of the following year. When the temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius, the yellow color begins to be more obvious and darker. Depending on the year, the grass can turn yellow from October to November or later until the end of December. Winter in Ba Quang usually fluctuates between 8 and 15 degrees Celsius, the air is dry and changes quickly, so visitors should choose a sunny day to ensure safe travel and easily capture the most sparkling moments.
Many people compare Ba Quang in the burning grass season to a "miniature Mongolia" in the border region of Cao Bang, because of the wildness of the steppe combined with the typical mountainous terrain.
At the end of 2023, the Ba Quang Burnt Grass Hill Festival was held for the first time, attracting a large number of visitors and marking an important turning point in local tourism.
The festival not only honors the unique natural beauty of Ba Quang but also contributes to promoting the cultural identity of the local community.
Since then, Ba Quang grass hill has been officially mentioned as a highlight in the Eastern Cao Bang tourist route, part of the journey "Experience indigenous culture in a fairyland" of Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark.
