According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hung Yen province, the province currently has nearly 1,900 hectares of oranges; of which, about 800 hectares are cared for according to VietGAP process, concentrated in the communes of Khoai Chau, Tong Tran, Hiep Cuong, Van Giang, Nghia Tru, Nghia Dan and Hong Chau ward... mainly Hung Yen oranges, Vinh oranges, Duong Canh oranges, V2 oranges, yellow-heart oranges... This year's orange output is estimated at about 38,000 tons of fruit.
This is the third orange crop that Mr. Luu Van Dan's family in Nghia Dan commune grows oranges according to VietGAP standards. Mr. Dan shared that in the past, people mainly grew sugarcane but the efficiency was not high, so they switched to growing oranges, mainly Vinh oranges. However, orange growing mainly depends on weather factors, as well as mutual learning experiences, so the yield is good one year, bad the next. This has led to a situation where many families are no longer interested in growing oranges.
In 2023, the Hung Yen Provincial Agricultural Extension Center deployed the "VietGAP Fruit Tree Intensive Cultivation" model for orange trees, so orange growers here are very excited to learn and follow. The orange gardens full of fruit, attracting many customers to buy, are proof of the effectiveness of the model, Mr. Dan said.
Mr. Dan said that although growing oranges according to VietGAP standards takes more effort, the cost is low, mainly due to microbial fertilizers, the fruit is beautiful, even, juicy, so the price is higher. It is estimated that his family will harvest nearly 5 tons of fruit from 1 hectare of oranges, with a selling price of 25,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, his family will make a profit of about 70 million VND.
Mr. Nguyen The Binh's family in Hong Chau ward (Hung Yen) is one of the few households in Hung Yen that grows delicious, high -value coin oranges (imported orange variety - pv). Mr. Binh said that coin oranges, a delicious orange product, originate from China. This orange variety has a thin, light yellow peel, a light aroma, is juicy, has few seeds and a sweet taste. In particular, when ripe, a round coin-shaped knob is revealed at the bottom, so it is called coin orange.
According to Mr. Binh, his family currently has 450 orange trees, including 200 gerbera orange trees, which are expected to yield about 7 tons, with a fairly high selling price. Although the oranges will not be ready for harvest for another 20 days, almost all of these oranges have been ordered by customers, mainly as gifts.
Although the cashew orange has high economic value, this orange variety cannot be propagated by grafting or layering, but can only be grown by seedlings. Meanwhile, this orange variety does not exist in the country, so expanding the area is very difficult. This is also a concern of Mr. Binh as well as households growing this orange variety.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hung Yen province Nguyen Van Trang said that in recent years, along with longan and lychee trees, orange trees have become the main tree, helping to enrich Hung Yen farmers. In particular, in many localities such as Khoai Chau, Tong Tran, Hiep Cuong, Nghia Dan, Van Giang... people have converted hundreds of hectares of low-efficiency rice and color land to orange growing. Thereby, more and more orange growing areas have been formed with modern production and intensive farming processes according to VietGAP standards for products that are good in quality, beautiful in appearance, and especially safe for consumers.
Notably, in recent years, the trade promotion activities for the consumption of agricultural products of Hung Yen province have been promoted, especially the agricultural markets such as lychee, longan, and Hung Yen oranges have been organized and brought positive results. Thereby, both directly bringing high-quality agricultural products of Hung Yen to consumers and widely promoting Hung Yen agricultural products to domestic and foreign tourists.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Trang, in the coming time, the province will continue to transform the structure of varieties and crops towards increasing added value and economic efficiency; in which, the focus is to strengthen the construction and development of geographical indications, brands, and product packaging; promote the effectiveness of the Project on applying stamps to trace the origin of agricultural products to protect the brand, affirm the quality and reputation of Hung Yen agricultural products to consumers; at the same time, adjust the planning; direct and manage the conversion of crop structure, develop key citrus fruit growing areas such as longan, lychee, orange... according to large-scale concentrated commodity production areas, in order to maximize the advantages of land, climate, soil and strengths of each locality.
Along with improving the quality of Hung Yen oranges, the province continues to promote agricultural product consumption channels through e-commerce platforms; maintain sales channels through a chain of safe stores and supermarkets; create supply-demand connections between businesses and cooperatives and gardeners; at the same time, strengthen training, technology transfer, and encourage farmers to grow oranges according to VietGAP standards and organic farming to bring the best quality oranges to consumers.
