In the women's race, Hellen Obiri of Kenya won in a record time of 2 hours 19 minutes and 51 seconds. Obiri's time broke the previous course record of 2 hours 22 minutes and 31 seconds set by Margaret Okayo in 2003.
But the men's race was extremely dramatic with a fierce competition between two Kenyan athletes Benson Kipruto and Alexander Mutiso.
Mutiso caught up with Kipruto in the final 50 meters and made a final breakaway as they approached the finish line, the New York Times reported.

The two appeared to have crossed the finish line at the same time. Both men raised their arms in celebration as they crossed the finish line in the same time of 2:08:09, but it was later determined that Kipruto was the winner by 0.03 seconds. Never before has a New York Marathon been so close.
"It was amazing. The last part of the race was really tough. I tried my best to make sure I won," said Kipruto.
The New York Marathon is one of the six most prestigious marathons in the world . On average, about 50,000 athletes from all over the world qualify to participate in the tournament each year. For any long-distance runner, participating in the New York Marathon is a great honor.
