The ranking of the best Vietnamese universities in Asia in 2024 shows Ton Duc Thang University leading the way.

One school dropped out of the top 100.

On April 30th, the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine in the UK published its 2024 ranking of the best universities in Asia. Vietnam continues to have six universities named, all familiar names from previous years: Vietnam National University, Hanoi ; Hanoi University of Science and Technology; Hue University; Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City; Duy Tan University; and Ton Duc Thang University. All of these institutions either maintained their rankings or dropped in rank compared to the previous year.

Specifically, among 739 Asian universities, Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh City leads Vietnam at position 193, a drop of 107 places compared to the previous year. This is also the lowest ranking for the university since its inception, as it had been in the top 100 for the two preceding years, ranking 86th (2023) and 73rd (2022) respectively. A similar situation occurred with Duy Tan University in Da Nang , which fell to the 251-300 group from position 106.

Last year, Hanoi National University was in the 351-400 group, but now it has dropped to the 501-600 position, tied with Hanoi University of Science and Technology, which has not changed its ranking. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City National University has fallen from the 501-600 group to 601+. Hue University, which debuted last year at the 601+ rank, has maintained this position to date. Thus, only two universities have maintained their rankings since 2022: Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hue University.

Besides the six representatives mentioned above, Ho Chi Minh City Open University became the seventh Vietnamese university to enter the ranking of Asia's best universities for the first time with "reporter" status. This means the university has not yet been ranked because it only met certain criteria and not all requirements, but it is striving to be ranked. Two years prior, Da Nang University also had this status, but did not succeed in making it into the top rankings.

Previously, in the 2024 World University Rankings, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University were both in the 601-800 group out of more than 1,900 universities, leading Vietnamese universities, but had dropped in rank compared to their 401-500 position in 2023. Hanoi National University fell from 1,001-1,200 to 1,201-1,500. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and Hue University all remained in the 1,501+ ranking, maintaining their positions.

Change the ranking methodology.

This year, THE changed its ranking methodology to reflect the evolving landscape of higher education worldwide. Specifically, THE renamed three out of five ranking criteria groups and added or removed several sub-criteria, bringing the total number of ranking criteria to 18, instead of the previous 13. For the Asia University ranking, the organization also adjusted the weighting of several criteria to reflect the region's unique characteristics.

According to THE, the 18 criteria for ranking Asian universities fall into five groups: research quality (30% of the total score), research environment (28%, 1% lower than the world's best university rankings), teaching (24.5%, 5% lower), technology transfer (10%, 6% higher), and international outlook (7.5%). A new criterion, studying abroad, has also been included, but it is not weighted this year.

Overall, while Vietnamese universities scored highly on research quality, their research environments received modest scores. For example, Ton Duc Thang University and Duy Tan University were rated 86.6 and 81.3/100 respectively for research quality, but their research environments only scored 20.9 and 17.4 points. In contrast, at the top 3 universities in Asia, these two indicators differed by no more than 10 points.

This is the second time THE has changed its ranking methodology to evaluate Asian universities in the new context.

Universities also show significant differences in research quality, with Hue University scoring the lowest at 17.7 points, while the two National Universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were rated at 42.6 and 29.2 points respectively. However, Vietnamese universities do not differ too much in terms of research environment, ranging from 10.6 to 19.1 points. A similar trend is observed in teaching criteria, ranging from 14.2 points (Duy Tan University) to 24.4 points (Vietnam National University, Hanoi).

Regarding technology transfer, Hanoi University of Science and Technology broke through with 43.4 points, significantly higher than other universities which only ranged from 16.2 to 26.2 points. Ton Duc Thang University continued to lead in international prospects, with 63.1 points. Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam National University Hanoi, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, and Hue University also have international students accounting for 1% of their total student body of tens of thousands.

Where do Vietnamese universities rank in the list of best universities in Asia?

In 2024, THE ranked 739 universities from 31 countries and territories in Asia, including 98 new names. Besides Tsinghua University, Peking University continued to hold the top two positions for the fifth consecutive year, and China had another representative in the top 10: Zhejiang University. Following them were two universities from Hong Kong and Singapore, and one from Japan. Japan also had the most representatives with 119 universities.

THE is one of the three most prestigious, experienced, and influential university ranking organizations in the world, alongside QS (UK) and Shanghai Ranking Consultancy (China). This organization began ranking universities in 2004, alongside QS, a year after the world first had a global university ranking published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (later Shanghai Ranking Consultancy).
