Ranking of the best Vietnamese universities in Asia in 2024, led by Ton Duc Thang University

One school left the top 100

The Times Higher Education (THE) magazine in the UK announced the rankings of the best universities in Asia in 2024 on April 30. Vietnam continues to have 6 schools "named", all of which are familiar faces from previous years including Hanoi National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hue University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Duy Tan University, and Ton Duc Thang University. Of which, all units either maintained or dropped in rank compared to last year.

Specifically, among 739 Asian universities, Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh City leads Vietnam with 193rd place, down 107 places compared to last year. This is also the lowest ranking of this school since its appearance, when the previous two years were in the top 100, ranked 86th (2023) and 73rd (2022) respectively. The same thing happened to Duy Tan University in Da Nang , when it dropped to the 251-300 group from 106th place.

Last year, Hanoi National University was in the 351-400 group, now it has also dropped to 501-600, equal to Hanoi University of Science and Technology, unchanged in ranking. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City National University has dropped from 501-600 to 601+. Hue University debuted last year at 601+, and has maintained this position to date. Thus, only 2 universities will maintain their rankings from 2022: Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hue University.

In addition to the 6 representatives above, Ho Chi Minh City Open University became the 7th name from Vietnam to enter the ranking of the best universities in Asia for the first time with the status of "reporter" (reported group). This means that this unit has not been ranked because it only meets certain criteria but does not meet all the requirements, but is making efforts to be ranked. 2 years ago, Da Nang University also had this status, but was not successful in entering the top.

Previously, in the 2024 World University Rankings, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University were both in the 601-800 group out of more than 1,900 universities, leading Vietnamese universities but falling from the 401-500 position in 2023. Hanoi National University dropped from 1,001-1,200 to 1,201-1,500. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hue University were all ranked 1,501+, maintaining their rankings.

Change the ranking method

This year, THE changed its ranking method to reflect the changes in the world's higher education sector. Specifically, THE renamed 3/5 groups of ranking criteria and removed and added some new criteria, bringing the total number of ranking criteria to 18, instead of 13 as before. Particularly for the ranking of the best universities in Asia, this unit also adjusted the weight of several criteria to reflect the specific factors of the region.

According to THE, 18 criteria for ranking Asian universities fall into 5 groups, including research quality (accounting for 30% of the total score), research environment (28%, 1% lower than the world's best university rankings), teaching (24.5%, 5% lower), technology transfer (10%, 6% higher) and international outlook (7.5%). A new criterion for studying abroad is also included, but this year it has not been weighted.

In general, although representatives from Vietnam scored highly in terms of research quality, their research environment scored modestly. For example, Ton Duc Thang University and Duy Tan University were rated 86.6 and 81.3/100 points for research quality, respectively, but their research environment only scored 20.9 and 17.4 points. Meanwhile, in the top 3 universities in Asia, these two indicators are no more than 10 points apart.

This is the second time THE has changed its ranking method to evaluate Asian universities in the new context.

The schools also have a large difference in research quality, the lowest being Hue University with 17.7 points, or the two National Universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City being rated at 42.6 and 29.2 points respectively. However, Vietnamese universities are not too different in terms of research environment, ranging from 10.6 to 19.1 points. The same thing happens in teaching criteria, ranging from 14.2 points (Duy Tan University) to 24.4 points (Hanoi National University).

In terms of technology transfer, Hanoi University of Science and Technology made a breakthrough with 43.4 points, much higher than other universities which only fluctuated from 16.2 to 26.2 points. Ton Duc Thang University continued to lead in terms of international prospects, at 63.1 points. Ton Duc Thang University, Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University and Hue University are also units with the proportion of international students accounting for 1% compared to the total of tens of thousands of students.

Where do Vietnamese universities stand in the ranking of the best universities in Asia?

In 2024, THE ranked 739 schools from 31 countries and territories in Asia, including 98 new names. In addition to Tsinghua University, Peking University continued to hold the first and second positions for 5 consecutive years, China had one more representative in the top 10, Zhejiang University. Following that were 2 schools from Hong Kong, Singapore and one school from Japan. Japan was also the country with the most representatives with 119 schools.

THE is one of the three most prestigious, experienced and influential university ranking organizations in the world, along with QS (UK) and Shanghai Ranking Consultancy (China). This organization started ranking universities in 2004 with QS, one year after the world first had a global university ranking published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (later Shanghai Ranking Consultancy).
