HANOI - Scenes of soldiers pulling artillery and marching to Dien Bien Phu are depicted in paintings by many artists such as Tran Khanh Chuong and Tran Dinh Tho.

The painting, created by the artist in 1994, is part of the exhibition "The Road to Dien Bien Phu," which runs from April 26th to May 15th at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory. The exhibition features 70 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, sketches, and posters created between 1949 and 2009 by 34 artists.
Mai Văn Hiến (1923-2006) worked for many years in the military and the Vietnam Fine Arts Association. He primarily painted portraits of President Ho Chi Minh , soldiers, and the relationship between the military and the people with a simple, realistic style full of optimism. The artist was one of the pioneers of revolutionary realist art.

The painting "Pulling Artillery at Dien Bien Phu" was created by Tran Dinh Tho in 1994. The painting evokes many emotions in viewers because of the image of soldiers pulling artillery at night, serving in the Dien Bien Phu campaign of 1954.
Tran Dinh Tho (1919-2011) graduated from the last class of the Indochina College of Fine Arts (1939-1944). He held many important positions such as principal of the Vietnam College of Fine Arts, deputy director of the Institute of Art Research, acting director of the Institute of Fine Arts and Handicrafts, Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts (1969-1972)... In 2001, Tran Dinh Tho received the State Prize for Literature and Arts.

Cao Trong Thiem depicts a time of war and conflict in his paintings of Dien Bien Phu. Through the brushstrokes of the artist—who directly participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign—the terrain of the Muong Thanh basin, surrounded by mountains and hills, is recreated. In the paintings, soldiers aim their cannons at enemy strongholds, while female civilian workers carry ammunition, reinforcing the firepower.
Cao Trong Thiem, born in 1942, was the former director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum. Thanks to his time working as a journalist at the Vietnam News Agency, he gained many experiences and emotions that inspired his paintings.

Artist Tran Khanh Chuong completed the painting "The Road to Dien Bien Phu" in 2005.
Tran Khanh Chuong was born in 1943 in Thien Loc commune, Can Loc district, Ha Tinh province. He graduated from the Ceramics Department of the Hanoi Industrial Fine Arts School in the 1959-1963 academic year and was considered to have extensive knowledge of visual arts, creating works in many forms: painting, graphic art, and ceramics. He served as Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association from 1999 to 2019 and Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Vietnam Union of Literary and Artistic Associations from 2000 to 2010. In 2020, the artist passed away due to colon cancer.

The Vietnamese art community honors Nguyen Sang (1923-1988) as a master of painting, one of the "four masters" along with Lien, Nghiem, and Phai (Duong Bich Lien, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Bui Xuan Phai). He created works with many materials, was a leading figure in Vietnamese lacquer painting, successfully exploring modern painting styles while remaining true to traditional national art.

At the opening ceremony of the "Road to Dien Bien Phu" exhibition, Director of Cinema Vi Kien Thanh stated that all 70 paintings are related to the issues and events of the Dien Bien Phu campaign, recorded by artists of many generations, affirming that this is an elaborate collection of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.

According to Mr. Nguyen Anh Minh, director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, the exhibition is an opportunity to educate present and future generations about patriotism, the strength of national unity, and to commemorate our ancestors.

The collection of sketches of the Dien Bien Phu battlefield by artist To Ngoc Van before his death is one of the highlights of the event. Pictured is his oil painting "Preparing to Go to the Market, " painted in 1954.
To Ngoc Van (1906-1954) was a famous painter, one of the "big four" (Nguyen Gia Tri, To Ngoc Van, Nguyen Tuong Lan, Tran Van Can). He is considered the first to use oil paint in Vietnam.

In addition to direct display, 70 drawings are presented using cinemagraph technology. In the digital projection area, the museum has arranged several models of carts, uniforms, and equipment used by soldiers and civilians in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, offering a new experience.
