Expectations from the model street

In 2016, Le Trong Tan Street (Khuong Mai Ward, Thanh Xuan District) was selected as the first model street in Hanoi , with its road width tripled and a length of over 1.5km. The street begins at the intersection with the extended Ton That Tung Street and ends at the intersection with the road east of the Lu River.

The street also features more trees and standardized signage in terms of color and size.

Specifically, businesses are required to design signs using two basic colors: blue and red. The advertising signs must be 3.2-3.3 meters high from the ground, with the sign itself being 1.1 meters high. The length will depend on the storefront and will be arranged in an alternating pattern.

The model street when it was first established.

The implementation of that street project raised many questions from the public regarding its feasibility and effectiveness at the time.

At that time, the Thanh Xuan district leadership believed that, following the success of the model street Le Trong Tan, the district would implement similar projects on Nguyen Trai street (the section from Nga Tu So bridge to the end of the district's administrative boundary) to turn this section into a model street.

Model street deviates from standard after 8 years.

However, after 8 years of implementation, on Le Trong Tan street, according to According to the reporter 's observations, most of the signs have been replaced.

Observations along this street reveal shop signs of all sizes, colors, and designs. Signs adhering to a standardized format with three main colors (blue, red, and white) have almost completely disappeared.

Billboards now appear in a chaotic mix of shapes, colors, and sizes, unlike in the early days.

Speaking to Nguoi Dua Tin , several shop owners on this street said that in the beginning, when they put on the "uniform," the number of customers and revenue decreased because buyers had difficulty finding the address as all the houses looked the same green and red.

The sidewalks are being encroached upon by many shops, who use the space for their business activities.

According to some locals, if all the signs were the same, with the same colors, it would be very difficult for passersby to identify them, "the constant green and red colors are very dizzying." Furthermore, color has become an important characteristic in brand identification. If all the signs are the same, what's the point of advertising?

Walking along Le Trong Tan street, the sidewalks in front of the shops have been renovated, but they are also being used for indiscriminate parking, or even as business space for shops, making the area look chaotic and unsightly.

The signs reading "No littering on sidewalks and roads" and "No encroachment on sidewalks" were ignored by the public; no one complied.

People are throwing their household waste directly onto the street.

After 8 years, these model streets look no different from ordinary streets, even more chaotic with all kinds of incorrectly sized signs and billboards blocking pedestrian access.

From this, it can be seen that the laxity of the authorities and local management has also contributed to the chaotic and unsightly appearance of Le Trong Tan Street due to the encroachment of shops and stalls.
