According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, on the afternoon of December 11th and the night of December 12th, Northern Vietnam will be affected by the Northeast monsoon, followed by continuous cold air masses on December 12th, 13th, and 14th.
In Hanoi, the capital city, the weather turned cold from late afternoon and night of December 11th.
According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, early this morning, December 10th, the cold air mass in the North was still moving southward.
Due to the influence of a cold front combined with an upper-level easterly wind disturbance, from the night of December 10th to December 13th, the central and southern central regions will experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing very heavy rain.
Heavy rain in the central and southern central regions of Vietnam is likely to continue; thunderstorms may bring tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind.
On land, around the afternoon and night of December 11th, this cold air mass will affect the northeastern provinces, then the North Central region and some areas in the northwestern region.
From the night of December 12th, the cold air mass continued to intensify and affect the Northwest, Central, and some areas of the South Central regions of Vietnam. Winds shifted to the Northeast direction, reaching level 3 inland and levels 3-4 in coastal areas.
From the afternoon and night of December 11th, the weather in the Northern region will turn cold, with some mountainous areas experiencing severe cold. From the night of December 12th, the North Central region will also experience cold weather.
The lowest temperatures during this cold spell in Northern Vietnam and North Central Vietnam will generally range from 14-17 degrees Celsius, 11-14 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas, and below 10 degrees Celsius in some high mountainous regions.
In Hanoi, the weather turned cold from late afternoon and night of December 11th. The lowest temperatures during this cold spell were generally 15-17 degrees Celsius.
At sea, during the day and night of December 10th, the central and southern parts of the South China Sea (including the Spratly Islands), the sea area from Binh Dinh to Ca Mau, from Ca Mau to Kien Giang , and the Gulf of Thailand will experience showers and thunderstorms; during thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes and strong gusts of wind.
From the evening and night of December 11th, the Gulf of Tonkin will experience strong northeasterly winds of force 6, gusting to force 7-8; from the night of December 12th, winds will gradually strengthen to force 6-7, gusting to force 8-9; the sea will be rough; waves will be 2-3 meters high.
In the northern South China Sea (including the waters around the Paracel Islands), the northeast wind is gradually strengthening to force 6-7, gusting to force 8-9; the sea is rough; waves are 3-5 meters high.
Analyzing early warnings about the possibility of severe cold, frost, and heavy rain in the Central region, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of the Weather Forecasting Department, National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, said that according to forecasts, around the afternoon of December 11 and the night of December 12, the Northern region will be affected by the Northeast monsoon.
Then, around December 12th, 13th, and 14th, Northern Vietnam will experience a continuous influx of cold air.
Against the backdrop of sharply falling temperatures due to this Northeast monsoon, temperatures will continue to drop from December 11th to 13th.
Around December 14-15, the mountainous and midland areas of Northern Vietnam are likely to experience severe cold, with some places experiencing extreme cold, and average temperatures dropping below 15 degrees Celsius.
"Such a sharp drop in temperature not only affects human health but also impacts crops and livestock. Therefore, people in the mountainous and midland areas of Northern Vietnam need to have plans to keep their livestock and poultry warm, and crops that are not heat-tolerant need adequate protection," advised Mr. Nguyen Van Huong.
In addition, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong also assessed that during this cold spell, strong winds will occur at sea in most of the northern and central areas of the East Sea, including the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands and the Gulf of Tonkin; the sea area from Quang Tri to Binh Thuan will have northeast winds of level 6 and 7, with sea levels of 3-5 meters and rough seas.
Mr. Nguyen Van Huong predicted that from the night of December 10th to December 15th, the impact of a cold front combined with an easterly wind disturbance will affect the North and South Central regions. The focal area from Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa is likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall over a wide area, affecting the production activities of people in the South Central region.
