China: The ice sculptures in Harbin are famous for their crystal-clear, bubble-free appearance, due to being mined in a special area of the Songhua River.
Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China. The city grew from a small rural settlement along the Songhua River to become one of the largest cities in northeastern China by 1898 thanks to the East China Railway project.
With an average annual temperature of 4.25°C and an extreme low of -42.6°C, Harbin is nicknamed the "Ice City" and boasts a thriving winter tourism industry, notably its annual ice sculpture festival. Ice sculptures are the art of ice carving, and when displayed, they are combined with lighting to create a dazzling and magical spectacle.
