Speaking in Parliament , Minister Pistorius emphasized that Berlin will allocate 53.25 billion euros for next year, an increase of 1.3 billion euros, although less than his initial request. In addition, the country will utilize a special fund worth 22 billion euros in 2025. Therefore, Germany will spend more than 75 billion euros on security and defense.
This year, for the first time in over three decades, Germany will spend 2% of its GDP on defense, as required by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
He also noted that in the future, Berlin will have to significantly increase its defense spending.
Recently, Germany has tightened controls at its land borders to prevent illegal migration, terrorist threats, and cross-border organized crime.
However, Berlin's move has provoked reactions from neighboring countries and the European Union (EU) due to concerns about its impact on the principle of free movement within the Schengen area.
Germany's neighbors are concerned about the potential disruption to trade, tourism, and European unity. The European Commission is currently discussing with Berlin the EU 's decision to impose border controls.
