(NLĐO) – Contrary to expectations of a positive outlook, the stock market lost all of the gains from the previous week.
The VN-Index closed at 1,254.59 points, down 20.55 points; the HNX Index stopped at 225.66 points, down 3.48 points compared to the end of last week.
Stocks that contributed significantly to the market's gains included VTP, VGC, CTR, BCM, NVL… Stocks that caused the VN-Index to fall included CTG, TCB, BID, MWG, VPB…
Liquidity decreased sharply compared to the end of last week, with trading value on HOSE falling by nearly 20%, the lowest in the past 20 weeks. Foreign investors continued their net selling trend with over 780 billion VND on HOSE.
Many investors expressed discouragement, reducing stock trading activity towards the end of the year and shifting some of their capital to other investment channels such as savings accounts and gold purchases.
Mr. Vo Kim Phung, Head of Analysis Department at BETA Securities Company, commented that last week, the market witnessed strong selling pressure, especially in the last trading session, causing the VN-Index to fall sharply by 1.61% compared to the previous week. The decrease in liquidity indicates cautious sentiment and investors waiting on the sidelines. Strong net selling by foreign investors further increased market pressure.
The stock market has been performing poorly in recent days.
"The market is experiencing certain fluctuations with liquidity remaining low. For short-term investors, risk management is paramount; limit the use of financial leverage and prioritize a safe investment portfolio structure. For long-term investors, the current corrections may be a suitable time to accumulate stocks with strong fundamentals, but do not rush to buy at the bottom; instead, buy stocks cautiously," said Mr. Vo Kim Phung.
Pinetree Securities believes that the surge in the US dollar strength index to a two-year high exceeding 109 points acted as a negative catalyst, causing the VN-Index to be sold off at the end of the week. Given the continued exchange rate tension and the strong net selling by foreign investors last week, investor apprehension is unlikely to ease immediately next week.
"A key psychological support factor for investors right now is the gradual revelation of bank earnings results, especially positive expectations regarding credit growth. Recently, Agribank was the first to announce an 8% increase in pre-tax profit. In a positive scenario, the VN-Index could fall to the 1,240 point range and consolidate, waiting for new capital to enter before starting another recovery trend," said an expert from Pinetree Securities.
