Most recently, the first Vietnamese-Chinese and Chinese-Vietnamese Literature Translation Contest was officially launched, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-China diplomatic relations, and the Vietnam-China Humanities Year, while creating an academic playground for students, international students and the community of literature and language lovers.
The contest is organized by the Consulate General of China in Ho Chi Minh City, Chi Culture Joint Stock Company (Chibooks) in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology (HUFLIT), Beijing University of Foreign Studies (Center for Vietnamese Studies), Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, Chinese Writers Association, and Chinese Literature Reading Club in Vietnam.
This is the kick-off activity from the series of events "The First Vietnam - China, China - Vietnam Literature Exchange", to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam - China diplomatic relations, and the Vietnam - China Humanities Year, while creating an academic playground for students, international students and the community who love literature and language. This is also an opportunity to improve literary translation skills, nurture the love of literature, and contribute to promoting the image of the two countries' literature to a large number of readers at home and abroad.
The contest is open to students majoring in Chinese in Vietnam who are able to translate Vietnamese-Chinese, Chinese students majoring in Vietnamese, Vietnamese students studying in China and freelance translators who are able to translate Vietnamese-Chinese (under 3 years of translation experience, HSK 4 or higher, or have only translated 1 book).
Candidates choose to translate typical contemporary Vietnamese and Chinese poems or short stories (no more than 1,000 words) from the list of works provided by the Organizing Committee. Entries will be evaluated based on the criteria: accuracy - coherence - richness of literature. Outstanding works will be published on the media channels of the university, the organizing unit, the Vietnam Writers Association and the Chinese Writers Association.
The list of entries for the Vietnamese-Chinese translation contest (for Chinese contestants) includes famous works of Vietnamese literature such as “Green Bamboo” (author Nguyen Duy), “Waves” (author Xuan Quynh), “Small Spring” (author Thanh Hai), the poem “Walking in the Tram Perfume” (author Hoai Vu), “The First Leaf” (author Hoang Nhuan Cam), “Urbanization Diary” (author Mai Van Phan), “Crossing the Stream with Uncle Ho”, “Green Lotus” (author Son Tung), “Melody of Time” (author Trinh Bich Ngan)...
The Chinese-Vietnamese translation contest entries (for Vietnamese contestants) include many poems and essays by famous contemporary Chinese poets and writers.
The contest brings together prestigious writers and translators from Vietnam and China, along with professors and doctors teaching language majors as judges.
Prize structure:
2 First prizes: 6 million/prize (each category: Vietnamese - Chinese, Chinese - Vietnamese Translation).

The expected time for receiving entries is from September 22 to November 10, 2025, and the time for marking is from November 10 to 20, 2025. The award ceremony is expected to take place on November 21 at HUFLIT and Beijing Foreign Studies University (online and in-person).
In recent times, there have been many connections, exchanges and promotions between the two literatures of Vietnam and China. At the end of 2024, two books from the Vietnamese Culture Bookcase, Chinese edition: "Vat qua nhung ngan may" (author Do Quang Tuan Hoang, translator Chu Duong) and "Nguoi Hanoi, stories of eating and drinking in the past" (author Vu The Long, translator Thanh Doa) were launched and introduced to readers by Chibooks and Guangxi Science and Technology Publishing House, with the participation of author Do Quang Tuan Hoang. This is also the first time a Vietnamese author has come to exchange and introduce books in China.
In 2025, translator Nguyen Le Chi and 14 literary translators from many literary backgrounds were awarded the title “Friend of Chinese Literature” in July. Previously, author Do Quang Tuan Hoang and translator Nguyen Le Chi participated in many exchange activities and promoted Vietnamese literature in cities in Guangxi and Guangdong, China from May 23 to 30.
The contest promises to become a bridge connecting Vietnamese and Chinese literature, and at the same time an opportunity for the young generation to affirm their translation ability and explore cultural depth through language.
