A "noble" Chinese fruit has dropped in price to over 10,000 VND/kg.

(Dan Tri) - The supply of milk grapes continues to increase sharply in China, causing the selling price to drop to a record low. In Vietnam, this fruit is being sold at a super cheap price, just over 10,000 VND/kg.

Shine Muscat grapes (peony grapes) are a premium grape variety, known as the "King of grapes" - "King of grapes" originating from Japan with a sweet, characteristic aroma, selling price up to more than 1-3 million VND/kg. However, after China massively planted them on a large scale, this "noble" fruit continuously fell in price, becoming a common product.

This year’s crop, the price of Chinese milk grapes continues to plummet due to a sharp increase in supply. In many places, the price of this item is only 10-12 yuan/kg (equivalent to 36,000-45,000 VND), according to Yangcheng News. Even at wholesale markets in Kunming (Yunnan province), the wholesale price of milk grapes has dropped to 2-3 yuan/kg (7,000-10,000 VND/kg).

Over the past five years, the area planted with this grape variety in China has nearly tripled to more than 100,000 hectares, accounting for a large proportion of the country's fresh grape output, causing an imbalance in supply and demand in the market.

In China, milk grapes are now widely grown in provinces such as Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong and Liaoning. Sichuan is one of the largest growing areas, with the peak harvest in August.

Due to oversupply, Chinese milk grapes exported to Vietnam are also sold at low prices. Currently, Vietnam is among the main export markets for grapes from China. In 2024, grape exports to Vietnam will reach 151,500 tons with a value of 1.85 billion yuan.

According to a survey by Dan Tri reporters, Chinese milk grapes continue to fall in price to around 10,000-30,000 VND/kg. Ms. Tran Uyen, a fruit trader in Thanh Xuan ward ( Hanoi ), said she sells a 9-10kg box for 195,000 VND, equivalent to only 19,000 VND/kg, if buying in large quantities the price will be cheaper.

“The price of this year’s milk grapes is very cheap, crunchy, and sweet, so many people buy them. Some people buy them to eat or give to friends. Because I import a large quantity, I also lower the price to make it easier to sell,” said Ms. Uyen.

Similarly, many retailers are also selling Chinese milk grapes on social networking groups at cheap prices, ranging from 110,000-160,000 VND/box. If you buy in bulk, the price will be cheaper.

Mr. Pham Hung, an online fruit wholesaler, said that August is the season, there are many grapes so the price is cheap. Milk grapes are now only 99,000 VND for a 9kg basket of 5 bunches. He said that this type of grape is still more popular because of its beautiful appearance and sweet taste, so in just one week he sold several tons of grapes wholesale, the goods are constantly arriving but still sell out quickly.

Speaking to Economic Daily, Ou Lianwei, sales director of Yimutian Group, said that from the perspective of market rules, the price of Chinese Shine Muscat grapes is an inevitable trend. However, good quality products still have high prices.

For growers, strict management of the cultivation process, focusing on quality, and improving cultivation technology are suitable solutions. For consumers, they can choose grapes with different prices and qualities, depending on their needs and finances.
