According to the announcement, Manchester United's wage bill in the first quarter fell to £73.6 million. The main reasons stemmed from two large-scale staff cuts and a reduction in bonus payments.
Furthermore, MU also saved a lot of money as Barcelona was covering Marcus Rashford's entire £325,000-a-week salary during his loan spell.
In 2026, Manchester United could save even more if Barcelona activate Rashford's buyout clause. Furthermore, Casemiro, one of the team's highest-paid players, is likely to leave Old Trafford next year. The situation is similar for Jadon Sancho, whose £250,000-a-week contract expires in June, with no plans for renewal.
The significant reduction in the wage bill will open up an opportunity for MU to recruit a top-class midfielder in the upcoming transfer window. The club is currently interested in players such as Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba.
In other news, despite a reduction in the wage bill, Manchester United's revenue in the first quarter also declined to £140.3 million. This was due to the club not participating in European competitions and playing two fewer home games compared to the same period last year. Sponsorship revenue also decreased by approximately £5 million after a series of major contracts such as Tezos, Marriott Bonvoy, and Melitta ended.
However, CEO Omar Berrada insisted the club remains on track, projecting full-year revenue of £640–660 million.
