CNN reported on February 1st that President Donald Trump's administration is about to lay off law enforcement officials, including dozens of FBI agents who were involved in investigations related to Trump and the January 6, 2021, protest storm of the Capitol building.
This move demonstrates how the new administration is acting swiftly to fulfill Trump's promise to retaliate against the Justice Department and the FBI, agencies he claims were used against him.
According to sources, interim leaders at the Justice Department have spent the past week compiling a list of agency employees who displease Trump for various reasons. Several agents and analysts have been warned by FBI leadership that they could be asked to resign or be forced to quit.
What does President Trump's first week in office reveal about his second term?
Agents involved in investigating allegations of Trump's misconduct in handling classified documents and those investigating some 1,600 people accused or convicted in connection with the Capitol riots have feared they may face retaliation for their work.
The Department of Justice and the FBI declined to comment on the matter.
According to information obtained by CNN, at least 12 prosecutors who handled cases related to the riots had their contracts terminated by the Department of Justice on January 31. At the FBI, at least six senior leaders were asked to retire, resign, or were forced to leave their jobs.
Reuters, citing a memo, reported that Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll confirmed that eight senior officials at the agency had been asked to resign or were forced to leave their jobs. The FBI was also instructed to quickly release a list of all current and former employees involved in investigations into the January 6, 2021 riots.
Currently, Trump's nominee to lead the FBI, Kash Patel, is awaiting Senate confirmation. During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on January 30th, Patel stated that he was unaware of any upcoming personnel plans at the FBI.
