Russia begins restricting calls on Telegram and WhatsApp

Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor said the owners of both Telegram and WhatsApp have ignored repeated requests to take measures to prevent the use of their platforms for activities such as blackmail and terrorism.

Russia's communications regulator Roskomnadzor said on August 13 that the country has begun restricting some calls on Telegram and WhatsApp, messaging apps owned by US technology company Meta.

Russia's Interfax news agency quoted Roskomnadzor as saying the restrictions were aimed at "fighting crime."

According to Roskomnadzor, the owners of both Telegram and WhatsApp have ignored repeated requests to take measures to prevent the use of their platforms for activities such as extortion and terrorism.

Meta and Telegram have not commented on the matter.

Last month, President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing the development of a state-backed messaging app that integrates with government services to reduce dependence on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.

Russia has long sought to establish digital sovereignty by promoting domestic services to replace foreign technology platforms amid the withdrawal of some Western companies from the Russian market following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict./.
