On August 28, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Ukrainian government's decision not to extend the gas transit agreement from Russia would seriously harm the interests of European consumers.

A day earlier (August 27), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kiev had no plans to extend the gas transit agreement with Moscow.
Responding to reporters, Mr. Peskov stated: "Of course, such decisions by the Ukrainian side will seriously harm the interests of European consumers - those who still want to buy Russian gas.
European consumers will have to pay more, thus making their industry less competitive."
According to Mr. Peskov, Russia has alternative routes to supply gas to Europe.
In December 2019, Moscow and Kiev signed a five-year agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine: 45 billion m³ in 2020 and 40 billion m³/year in 2021-2024.
In 2021, Kiev received about $1 billion (€0.92 billion) in gas transit fees from Moscow.
Due to lower deliveries to Europe since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine (February 2022), profits have dropped to around $700 million/year.
