On the afternoon of January 15, in Vinh city, a workshop on Creating carbon credits in rice production in Nghe An took place with the participation of representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); Green-carbon INC Japan; North Central Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology; Vietnam Academy of Agriculture; Nghe An Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and units under the Department.

Vietnam's carbon credit market to be operational soon
Carbon credits are a valuable resource for future agricultural production but have not been exploited. The Prime Minister has approved the One Million Hectares of Rice Project to Reduce Emissions in the Mekong Delta. In addition, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is currently promoting the early launch of the Vietnamese carbon credit market next year, which can officially participate in the world carbon credit exchange in the following years.
Methane emission reduction activities related to water regulation techniques in rice fields called “alternate wetting and drying” or Nong Lo Phoi, reduce water use and increase farmers’ income. Methane emissions reduced through this technique are the basis for issuing carbon credits, which directly benefit rice farmers through the credits they have achieved.

It is expected that the cooperation project to help rice farmers in Nghe An province to issue carbon credits by reducing methane emissions during rice cultivation will be implemented through consulting from a unit introduced by the Japan International Cooperation Agency in Vietnam.
With a rice production area of 180,000 ha/year, Nghe An has great potential for emission reduction with a large rice area, the potential to reduce 1.44 million t-CO2e. This project is in line with the United Nations' sustainable development goals, especially contributing positively to climate change mitigation, ensuring the conservation of water resources.
Production area planning to direct implementation
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Tien Duc - Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection shared: To produce rice in the direction of meeting the requirements of creating carbon credits, it is necessary to meet many criteria and requirements from the stage of organizing and implementing the production season and cultivation measures. Therefore, the government and specialized agencies need to coordinate, guide, direct, and plan the area, thereby providing standard production processes to direct implementation, creating pressure for production organizations to meet the requirements.

This is the first project implemented in Nghe An as well as Vietnam to obtain carbon credits in rice cultivation, with the support of JICA, so there are many favorable conditions for implementation. Related issues regarding technology, infrastructure, etc. will be resolved in each phase of the project.
Nationwide, the experiment of creating carbon credits in production has been carried out on a number of crops such as corn, sugarcane, rice... In Nghe An, after success on rice, it will be expanded to a number of other crops with large areas and potential such as corn, sugarcane, tea... as well as obtaining carbon credits by reducing emissions in cattle farming.

It is expected that in the first season, the program will be implemented on an area of nearly 6,000 hectares of rice in the districts of Nam Dan, Nghi Loc, Hung Nguyen, Do Luong, Dien Chau..., in the irrigation areas of the North Irrigation and the South Irrigation. The number of participating households is about 24,000 households.
