People in Hue are getting tetanus vaccinations after the floods.

SKĐS - Following the historic floods, the number of people in Hue City getting vaccinated against various diseases has increased, mainly due to tetanus vaccinations resulting from accidents during post-flood cleanup.

People in Hue are getting more tetanus vaccinations.

Early on a weekend morning, as the streets of Hue City were drying up after the historic floods, Mrs. PTPT (49 years old, residing in Vy Da ward) hurried to the Hue City Center for Disease Control (CDC) for a check-up and vaccination.

Ms. T. stated that while traveling, she accidentally stepped on an iron nail. After temporarily bandaging the wound to stop the bleeding, she immediately went for a check-up and received a tetanus shot.

Ms. T. came to get a tetanus vaccine.

"Even though it was a small wound, in the post-flood environment with lots of garbage, rusty metal, and dirty water, I was afraid of infection, so I got a shot for peace of mind. Prevention is always better than treatment," Mrs. T shared.

At the Hue City General Clinic (CDC), Ms. T. was received by a doctor who examined her, inquired about her vaccination history, and checked the condition of her wound. After consultation, the doctor prescribed a tetanus vaccine according to the correct safety procedure, and also provided instructions on wound care, personal hygiene, and post-vaccination health monitoring.

Similarly to Mrs. T., Mr. NVH (residing in Phu Xuan ward) came to get a tetanus vaccine after accidentally stepping on a steel wire while cleaning his house. "I bought medicine to use, but the wound was still swollen, so as soon as the water receded, I came to get the injection immediately to prevent infection," Mr. H. said.

Besides getting tetanus vaccinations, many people also take the opportunity to get other vaccines such as rabies vaccine, 6-in-1 vaccine for children, and vaccines against influenza, pneumonia, and digestive diseases…

A child was taken to a medical facility to receive a booster shot of the rabies vaccine.

The family of one-year-old Nam (residing in Phong Quang ward) said that Nam had previously been scratched on the face by a dog, but due to the heavy rain and flooding, they had to wait until the water receded before taking him to get a booster shot of the rabies vaccine.

Doctors say this is a time when many infectious diseases are more likely to occur, especially tetanus, due to skin wounds sustained during house cleaning and renovations or when traveling on roads still covered in mud and garbage.

According to statistics from the Hue City CDC, during the period from October 27th to November 7th (including widespread flooding from the afternoon of October 27th to November 3rd), the total number of people coming for vaccinations increased dramatically, including 123 cases of tetanus serum injection, 156 cases of tetanus vaccine injection, and 136 cases of rabies vaccine injection. The number of people coming for vaccinations increased significantly in the days following the floods.

Proactive prevention of infectious diseases.

According to MSc. Dr. Nguyen Le Tam, Deputy Director in charge of the Hue City CDC, immediately after the floodwaters receded, the unit proactively cleaned up the environment and disinfected facilities to receive people for vaccinations and medical examinations.

"We worked throughout the weekend to meet the increased demand for vaccinations from the public, while also coordinating with local health units to monitor and prevent outbreaks after the floods," said Dr. Tam.

People wait to receive vaccines and undergo post-vaccination monitoring at the CDC in Hue City.

According to Dr. Phan Thi Hong Nhan, from the Multi-Specialty Clinic (CDC Hue City), the unit has received many cases of tetanus vaccinations in recent days. The main reason is that during the cleanup process after the floods, people stepped on nails, wire, broken glass, etc., causing wounds. People came for vaccination as a preventative measure, because tetanus bacteria can develop silently and become dangerous if not vaccinated in time.

According to Dr. Nhan, many parents are taking advantage of the opportunity to bring their children for vaccinations under the expanded immunization program, especially the 6-in-1 vaccine, because the previous flooding disrupted the vaccination schedule.

Some children who are over the recommended age are also advised to switch to a more suitable vaccine to ensure effective immunity.

After floods, the risk of infectious disease outbreaks remains high. Floodwaters, mud, and debris create a favorable environment for bacteria and viruses to thrive. Complete and timely vaccination helps reduce the risk of infection and protect public health.

"Vaccination not only protects oneself but also contributes to preventing disease outbreaks after natural disasters. This is an effective, safe, and necessary measure in the current context," Dr. Nhan emphasized.
