Tetanus vaccination increases in Hue people

Early on a weekend morning, when the roads in Hue City had just dried up after the historic flood, Ms. PTPT (49 years old, residing in Vy Da Ward) hurried to the Hue City Center for Disease Control (CDC) for a check-up and vaccination.

Ms. T. said that while moving, she accidentally stepped on an iron nail. After temporarily bandaging the wound to stop the bleeding, she immediately went for a check-up and got a tetanus shot.

Mrs. T. came to get a tetanus vaccine.

"Although the wound was small, in the environment after the flood with lots of garbage, rusty iron and dirty water, I was afraid of infection so I got an injection for peace of mind. Prevention is better than waiting for the disease to occur and then treating it," Ms. T. shared.

At the General Clinic (CDC Hue City), Ms. T. was received by a doctor, examined, had her vaccination history taken, and had her wound checked. After consultation, the doctor prescribed a tetanus vaccination according to safety procedures, and instructed her on wound care, personal hygiene, and post-vaccination health monitoring.

Similar to Ms. T., Mr. NVH (residing in Phu Xuan ward) came to get a tetanus vaccine after accidentally stepping on a steel wire while cleaning the house. "I bought medicine to use but the wound was still swollen, so when the water receded, I came to get a preventive injection," Mr. H. said.

Not only tetanus vaccination, many people also come to get other vaccines such as rabies vaccine, 6-in-1 vaccine for children, flu vaccine, pneumonia vaccine, digestive vaccine...

The family of NAM (1 year old, resident of Phong Quang ward) said that previously, M. was scratched in the face by a dog, but due to the flood, they had to wait until the water receded to take him in for a rabies vaccine booster shot.

Doctors say this is the time when many infectious diseases are likely to arise, especially tetanus due to skin wounds during cleaning and home renovations or when traveling on roads still covered in mud and garbage.

According to statistics from the Hue City CDC, during the period from October 27 to November 7 (including widespread flooding from the afternoon of October 27 to November 3), the total number of vaccination cases increased dramatically, including 123 cases of tetanus serum injection, 156 cases of tetanus vaccine injection and 136 cases of rabies vaccine injection. Particularly on the days after the flood, the number of people coming for vaccination increased significantly.

Proactively prevent infectious diseases

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Le Tam, Deputy Director in charge of Hue City CDC, said that immediately after the water receded, the unit proactively cleaned the environment and disinfected facilities to receive people for vaccination and medical examination.

"We work all weekend to meet the increased vaccination needs of the people, and at the same time coordinate with grassroots medical units to monitor and prevent epidemics after the flood," said Dr. Tam.

Dr. Phan Thi Hong Nhan, General Clinic (CDC Hue City) said that in recent days, the unit has received many cases of tetanus vaccination. The main reason is that during the cleanup after the flood, people stepped on nails, steel wires, broken bottles, etc., causing injuries. People come to get vaccinated for prevention, because tetanus bacteria can develop silently and cause danger if not vaccinated in time.

According to Dr. Nhan, many parents took advantage of the time to take their children to get vaccinated with vaccines in the expanded immunization program, especially the 6-in-1 vaccine, because the previous flooding period caused the vaccination schedule to be interrupted.

Some children over the prescribed age are also advised to switch to the appropriate vaccine type to ensure effective immunity.

After floods, the risk of infectious disease outbreaks is always high. Floodwater, mud and waste are favorable environments for bacteria and viruses to grow. Timely and complete vaccination helps people reduce the risk of infection and protect public health.

"Vaccination is not only to prevent disease for yourself but also to help prevent epidemics after natural disasters. This is an effective, safe and necessary measure in the current context," Dr. Nhan emphasized.
