After receiving the bird, Mobile Forest Ranger and Forest Fire Prevention Team No. 2, along with the Nhựt Tảo commune authorities, quickly completed the handover procedures to care for this rare bird before releasing it back into its natural environment in accordance with the law.
Previously, on December 9th, this bird flew into the reed field of Mr. Nguyen Van Cu's family (Nhut Tao commune), near the main gate of the Vam Nhut Tao Historical Site. Recognizing it as an unusual, large bird, suspected to be a rare species, Mr. Cu's family proactively reported it to the local authorities for appropriate action.

Upon verification, authorities determined that this is a Great Hornbill (Buceros bicornis), belonging to Group IB in the list of endangered, rare, and precious species according to Circular No. 27/2025/TT-BNNMT dated June 24, 2025, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment regulating the management of endangered, rare, and precious species. The Great Hornbill handed over this time is healthy and shows no signs of injury. The bird has a large horn-like beak and an estimated weight of about 2.5 kg.
