(NLDO) – In the hectic last days of the year, when everyone is busy preparing for Tet, many young people in Ho Chi Minh City still take time to sow spring seeds for the community.
January 26 (December 27) is the last day that medical facilities in Ho Chi Minh City organize blood donation. Hearing the news, Tran Ha Hoang Chau (22 years old) asked permission from work to come in a little late to donate blood. Chau was also one of the first young people to arrive at the Ho Chi Minh City Blood Donation Center (Tan Binh District).
As a young person working in the health field, Chau realizes that donating blood is her responsibility to the community.
Many young people take advantage of this opportunity to perform noble deeds on the eve of the New Year.
"Every year, I donate blood 3-4 times. Including this time, I have 11 "medals". Although this is a voluntary activity, I always try to complete the "KPI" that I set every year" - Chau expressed.
Chau confided that she studied medicine and at first only donated blood as part of a movement organized by her university. Later, when she learned more, Chau realized the immeasurable value of each drop of blood.
After graduating, Chau worked in the health field and realized that donating blood gradually became her responsibility for her family and community.
"Not only can I help many patients in emergency situations overcome the 'threshold of death,' but I can also increase the chances of my relatives receiving blood transfusions. The maximum amount of blood reimbursed is equal to the amount of blood I donated, in case the donor or their relative needs a transfusion," Chau said.
At the age of 22, Hoang Chau owns quite a lot of "assets"
Although it's almost Tet, there are still many people coming to donate blood.
Similarly, Nguyen Kieu Duyen (26 years old, living in Tan Binh district) also participated in donating blood at the end of the year. Previously, Duyen used to donate blood regularly, but due to her busy work, she has not participated recently.
Duyen read that the demand for blood during the Lunar New Year holidays increased, especially for rare blood types. The city's blood bank needed 2,000 more units of rare blood to reserve for emergency and treatment needs during the upcoming Lunar New Year holidays. Therefore, Duyen was determined to donate blood this time.
"This is my first time at a blood donation center; previous times I donated from my mobile donation vehicle. When I arrived, I was very surprised to see so many young people also performing this meaningful act. Although I don't have a rare blood type, my O blood type can be transfused to people with other blood types, helping to increase the chances of saving more lives," Duyen confided.
According to the convention of the International Blood Transfusion Society, the Rh- blood group is a rare blood group because it accounts for only about 0.1% of the population. In the human body, the process of blood production and blood destruction is always balanced to maintain stable blood composition and volume.
According to research, every day the body has about 200-400 billion red blood cells that die naturally and are replaced by new red blood cells. The average life of a red blood cell is 90-120 days. The body will continuously produce new red blood cells and compensate.
