The heavy rains that lasted at the end of July caused many vegetable growing areas in the province to be flooded and destroyed, leading to a sharp decrease in supply and a simultaneous increase in the price of green vegetables in the markets.
Ms. Do Thi Minh in Minh Khai ward ( Hung Yen city) complained after going to the market: For more than a week now, the price of green vegetables in the market has increased every day, doubling or tripling compared to the beginning of July. Water spinach has increased from 5,000 VND to 8-10,000 VND/bunch; mustard greens from 4-5,000 VND to 9-10,000 VND/bunch; squash from 17-20,000 VND/kg; jute and Malabar spinach have increased by 3-4,000 VND/bunch. To ensure the family's green vegetable ration, I have to consider switching to using some types of sprouts, bean sprouts, banana flowers... instead.
These days, the amount of green vegetables supplied to the Red River agricultural wholesale market in Yen Phu commune (Yen My) is not as rich and diverse as in mid-July. Mr. Luong Duc Canh, Head of the Management Board of the Red River agricultural wholesale market, said: At this time, the amount of vegetables, tubers, and fruits sold at the market has decreased by 50-60% compared to before the heavy rains at the end of July. The sudden decrease in supply has caused the selling price of vegetables, tubers, and fruits to increase by 50% or more. In particular, the price of spices such as onions, dill, and coriander has increased by 3 times but there are still no products for sale. To ensure market demand, traders have proactively imported some tubers and fruits to replace green vegetables and have a long preservation time such as radishes, chayote, zucchini, pumpkin, potatoes, carrots, etc. for consumption.
Surveys at local markets in the province such as Van Giang town market (Van Giang), Tien Lu market (Tien Lu), Gao market, Pho Hien market (Hung Yen city)... showed that the prices of vegetables and tubers increased by an average of 40-50% compared to before, especially leafy vegetables and spices with prices 3-4 times higher than 10 days before.
According to Ms. Truong Thi Mai, a trader at Tien Lu market (Tien Lu), right after the heavy rain, green vegetables were supplied to the market in large quantities because people harvested quickly to avoid being crushed. But after about a week, the green vegetables supplied to retailers decreased sharply. After each prolonged heavy rain, the group of vegetables that were most affected and increased in price were leafy vegetables and spice vegetables.
In vegetable growing areas in the communes of Yen Phu (Yen My), Trung Nghia (Hung Yen city), Thien Phien (Tien Lu)..., the heavy rains that lasted for a long time in the last days of July caused many vegetable areas to be flooded and crushed. After that, the hot weather caused severe damage to many vegetable growing areas, especially green vegetables such as: various types of mustard greens, Malabar spinach, jute, water spinach...
These days, farmers in Yen Phu commune (Yen My) are taking advantage of favorable weather to prepare the land, sow seeds and plant additional vegetables on the damaged area. Mr. Nguyen Huu Hung, Director of Yen Phu commune's General Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: After the prolonged heavy rain at the end of July, the hot weather with high temperatures caused the cooperative's vegetable and spice area to be damaged by about 80%; water spinach and some climbing plants such as squash, luffa, cucumber were damaged by about 40% of the area. From the beginning of August until now, the cooperative has supplied the market with about 1 ton of vegetables, tubers and fruits, a decrease of about 70% of the output compared to the same period last month. Currently, the cooperative is instructing members to proactively take care of the vegetable area that is still able to recover and take advantage of preparing the land, replanting short-term vegetables to supply the market.
According to forecasts, the price of green vegetables will remain high in the coming time, because vegetable growers are currently focusing on cleaning up damaged areas to clean the fields, preparing to replant new vegetables. However, after a short time, vegetable growing areas will be restored, short-term vegetables such as cabbages, water spinach will be harvested and vegetable prices will stabilize again...
To ensure the supply of green vegetables to the market and increase income for people in localities specializing in vegetable cultivation, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends that people monitor weather developments to have appropriate production plans. At this time, people need to take advantage of land preparation and planting short-term vegetables to replace damaged areas. Along with that, consumers should choose alternative groups of tubers and fruits such as: squash, radish, potatoes, chayote... to reduce supply pressure and ensure the quality of daily meals.
