North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country's maritime defense capabilities will be "fully demonstrated" in any necessary sea area without any restrictions.
KCNA did not disclose the date or location of the inspection. During the inspection, the North Korean leader inspected a "nuclear-powered strategic missile submarine" being built under a defense decision announced at the 2021 Party Congress.
Nuclear-powered submarines are among the advanced weapons systems that Kim Jong Un has pledged to develop, including spy satellites and solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Kim Jong Un stressed the need to develop "overwhelming warships" as a powerful deterrent to curb the enemy's "warship diplomacy ."
According to KCNA, the North Korean leader also set out the task of modernizing surface and underwater naval vessels, including the goal of developing and possessing warships, but did not provide further details.
In September 2023, North Korea unveiled its first tactical nuclear attack submarine capable of carrying out underwater nuclear strikes. At the time, Kim Jong Un announced plans to build more submarines, including nuclear-powered ones.
