Relations between Thailand and Cambodia have deteriorated over the past week, with the two countries exchanging gunfire in several disputed border areas on Thursday, July 24.
Both countries attract large numbers of tourists each year, with Cambodia's Angkor Wat temple complex and the capital Phnom Penh being major draws, while Thailand sees many visitors to cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai, along with the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui.

Although the tourist hotspots are not located near the border clashes, visitors should take note amid the tensions.
Currently, many countries and territories around the world have issued travel advisories to Thailand and Cambodia, according to TTW .
United States : The U.S. Embassy in Thailand has issued a security alert, advising U.S. citizens to exercise extreme caution due to ongoing border clashes. The embassy advises travelers to avoid affected border areas and follow the instructions of local authorities.
United Kingdom : The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice, urging travellers to exercise extreme caution in border areas and follow the guidance of local authorities. The FCDO also notes the presence of unexploded mines in the area.
Canada : The Government of Canada advises travelers to exercise extreme caution when traveling to Cambodia, especially near the Thai-Cambodian border. The advisory highlights ongoing border disputes and the possibility of sudden changes in border crossing conditions.
Australia : The Australian government's Smartraveller service advises travellers to take normal safety precautions in Cambodia but notes that all land border crossings will be closed from 24 June 2025 due to a border dispute.
Hong Kong : The Hong Kong government's overseas travel warning system has issued an amber alert for Thailand and Cambodia, advising people to monitor the situation and exercise caution when traveling to these countries.

The ongoing border dispute has had a particularly damaging effect on the travel and tourism industries between the two countries. Visitors in cities such as Bangkok, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh have reported increased security and some disruption to their travel plans, but there has been no impact on major tourist hubs so far. However, the border closure could make it difficult for visitors planning to cross the Thai-Cambodian border. Clashes have led to the closure of all border crossings between the two countries, including the main one in northeastern Thailand. This poses particular problems for visitors planning to visit places such as Siem Reap, home to Angkor Wat, and Koh Chang in Thailand, which is close to the border.
