A series of stocks "soared" after one year.
Meanwhile, on the stock market, the VN-Index closed around 1,700 points on December 11th, up 35% since the beginning of the year. Although the index's increase was lower than that of gold, the market still saw many stocks with returns exceeding those of the precious metal.
As of December 11th, SJC gold bars were being sold at 154.5 million VND/ounce, representing an increase of over 80% compared to the beginning of the year. Gold rings were trading at 152.1 million VND/ounce, also showing a profit of over 80%.
According to statistics compiled by Tuoi Tre Online reporters, within the VN30 group, several stocks saw significant gains, including VIC, which rose 620% to over 144,000 VND/share;SHB, which increased 108% to 16,350 VND/share; VJC, which rose 88% to 188,000 VND/share; and VHM, which also maintained a substantial increase.
For example, if an investor takes 84.5 million VND (equivalent to the price of one SJC gold bar on December 31, 2024) to invest in gold or stocks, it can be seen that the return on investment for the two channels differs significantly.
With an initial investment of 84.5 million VND at the beginning of the year, the investor currently holding gold could potentially earn approximately 154 million VND (excluding the difference between the buying and selling price), equivalent to a profit of nearly 70 million VND.
Meanwhile, with the same amount of 84.5 million VND, the investor could have bought approximately 4,160 VIC shares at the beginning of the year (estimated at the initial price of around 20,300 VND/share). At the current price of over 146,000 VND/share, the value of this investment is approximately 607 million VND, yielding an estimated profit of over 520 million VND.

Other stocks with good liquidity and higher gains than gold include TAL (155%), ABB (114%), CII (110%), and SBT (106%).
The market is not lacking in stocks that have increased more than gold, but the stocks listed above have good liquidity, making it easy for investors to buy and sell. Some stocks have increased several times their value but have low liquidity, such as VEC, which increased 613% to over 60,600 VND/share, NVP, which increased 557% to 66,000 VND/share, and VVS, which increased 296% to 61,000 VND/share.
Why did these stocks surge?
Despite falling in the last two sessions, Vingroup 's VIC and VHM remain among the top-performing stocks since the beginning of the year.
Recently, stock prices have risen amidst Vingroup's expansion into sectors such as steel (VinMetal), elderly care (Vin New Horizon), entertainment (V-Film), renewable energy (VinEnergo), and transportation infrastructure (VinSpeed). Several major projects, such as the Ben Thanh - Can Gio railway and two offshore wind power projects in Ha Tinh, have also been assigned to businesses within the group's ecosystem.
In the electricity and infrastructure sector, GEE shares recorded consolidated after-tax profit of VND 1,374 billion in the third quarter, three times higher than the same period last year. The company also recorded a significant financial gain from restructuring its investment portfolio.
In the aviation sector, VJC shares benefit as Vietjet continues to expand its fleet, invest in a maintenance center at Long Thanh airport, and explores opening routes to Europe and America.
In a recent report, SSI Securities Company, the analytical unit, maintains a positive view on the market outlook for 2026.
SSI believes the biggest opportunities lie in the banking sector, especially stocks with good profit prospects and attractive valuations. The consumer sector is also positive thanks to recovering domestic demand, expanding retail networks, and the policy of raising the personal income tax threshold from January 2026, which helps increase disposable income for households.
With a stable macroeconomic foundation, attractive valuations, and signs of a return of foreign capital, SSI assesses that the Vietnamese stock market is currently in the trough of its cycle, opening up prospects for strong growth in the next two years.
Statistics from the beginning of the year to December 11th show that among the 1,580 stocks trading on HoSE, HNX, and UPCoM (excluding newly listed or newly registered stocks), the average market performance reached over 17%. This figure is lower than the increase in gold prices but is still about three times higher than the average 12-month savings interest rate.
Out of a total of 1,580 stocks, 818 increased in price, 621 decreased, and 119 remained almost unchanged. Notably, nearly 200 stocks recorded increases of over 50% since the beginning of the year, while conversely, 204 stocks decreased by more than 20%.
