On May 26, 2009, on Jeju Island, South Korea, the International Coordinating Committee of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme recognized Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An as a World Biosphere Reserve due to its distinctive and outstanding values: the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area, established in 2006 and part of the national protected area system; Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized in 1999; mangrove forests, particularly the nipa palm ecosystem in the Thu Bon River estuary; special-use forests on Cu Lao Cham Island; coastal protection forest systems; traditional craft villages; and outstanding tangible and intangible cultural values associated with the land and people of Hoi An throughout history.
