Houses are not built only with bricks

Police force helped with the demolition of the house and clearing the site to build a new house for Mr. Bui Van Thang in Hom hamlet.

During the recent stormy days, Mr. Bui Van Thang in Hom hamlet, Lac Luong commune no longer had to cower and fear in his rickety stilt house of only 24 square meters . Now, the old house with proximang sheet roof and fragile rafters before the storm has been replaced by a newly built house that ensures "3 hard".

The Party Secretary of the hamlet, Truong Van Khuyen, and Thang's relatives are probably the ones who feel most clearly the concern, close attention, and determination of the local Party Committee, government, and police force. Mr. Khuyen shared: Thang's father is a victim of Agent Orange. In recent years, he has shown unusual signs of awareness and behavior. Relatives, neighbors, and police forces who came to help demolish the old house and level the ground to build a new house were chased and beaten by him, thinking they were going to destroy the house. His wife also left, leaving behind their son, and had to rely on relatives for help. Due to the particularly difficult situation, in addition to the support of 60 million VND from the Fund for the Poor, the local police supported an additional 30 million VND and working days. The hamlet launched a movement of "whoever has something to help". Some people contributed money, others contributed labor, materials, and the house worth over 100 million VND was quickly completed. Xom Hom has 10 poor households receiving support to remove temporary houses, so people can rest assured when storms come.

Houses are not built only with bricks

Poor households in Lac Luong commune now have new houses to live in and no longer have to worry about leaks during storms.

Mr. Thang's family and 10 poor households in Hom hamlet are among 101 extremely poor households in Yen Thuy, Lac Luong, and Yen Tri communes that have had their homes rebuilt from the Emulation Movement to Eliminate Temporary and Dilapidated Houses, Phase 1. In a journey that is not long but full of responsibility and determination - "450 days and nights to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses for the poor", all temporary residences that were once called houses have been completely eliminated.

“Leaving no one behind” - the phrase is no longer a slogan, but has been realized by localities with “3 hard” houses that are sturdy against storms and rain (hard foundation, hard walls, hard roof). Each completed house has an average area of 50-70m2 , worth 130-250 million VND; the smallest house has an area of nearly 40m2 for single-parent households; there are houses of 100-110m2 , worth from 300 to more than 400 million VND. Whether big or small, the houses have one thing in common: helping the poor settle down and have confidence in the care and support of the Party Committee, government, organizations, and community.

In addition to support from the State budget, the Fund for the Poor, organizations: Youth, Women, Veterans... and armed forces, philanthropists have supported 510 working days, worth over 153 million VND and over 30 tons of cement, 100 cubic meters of sand, 80 square meters of roofing sheets, 90 square meters of doors and hundreds of cubic meters of soil and rock for filling.

Behind that result is the decisive and responsible participation of the Party Committee, the government, the Fatherland Front and organizations, with synchronous and creative solutions. Propaganda work has been promoted, the community understands that building shelters for poor households is not only a policy of the State but also a responsibility and humanity. That has helped to solve challenges and obstacles in the journey of eliminating temporary housing: households with special difficulties do not dare to receive support because they do not have counterpart funds; do not have legal land to build a house; suddenly there is a sick person in the house, waiting for old age...

The story of a poor family in Yen Tri commune is a clear example. The family that received support to remove the temporary house was too difficult to manage, the village Party Secretary had to "mortgage" his family's red book to borrow money, mobilizing the neighbors in the village to help at least 100 thousand VND each. Then there was the story of the cadre who went to mobilize and was bitten by a dog and had to pay for rabies vaccination himself, but he was not discouraged, on the day of the house inauguration he was still happy and proud to have contributed to bringing a warm home to the people.

Lac Luong Commune Party Secretary Bui Thi Binh draws experience from practice: There must be leadership, direction, decisive and responsible participation of Party committees, authorities, Fatherland Front and organizations. Mobilize the strength of people, businesses and communities; focus on skillful propaganda and mass mobilization work. The implementation process must be transparent and closely monitored to strengthen trust.

Looking back at the journey of eliminating temporary housing, what remains are not only hundreds of decent houses, but also the multiplied humanity and trust. The houses built from hardship have turned worries into happy smiles, turning the desolation of temporary living into hope for a bright future. These are houses built not only with bricks, but also with responsibility, enthusiasm and warm humanity.
