Phu Tho craft villages transform in the digital age

Amidst the strong wave of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, traditional craft villages in Phu Tho province are undergoing an impressive “transformation”. From small-scale manual production, many establishments and businesses have now boldly invested in modern machinery, taking advantage of the power of digital technology and social networks to bring their hometown products far and wide, not only keeping the passion of the craft alive but also expanding the domestic and foreign markets.

Currently, Phu Tho province is home to hundreds of traditional craft villages, ranging from carpentry, blacksmithing, rattan and bamboo weaving to mechanics, textiles, and ornamental plants. The entire province has thousands of production facilities that are daily creating jobs for rural workers and contributing to local economic development.

In recent years, in order to promote and develop traditional craft villages, Phu Tho province has issued many policies to support and encourage households and businesses to invest in machinery and apply modern technology to production, while expanding trade promotion through digital platforms, thereby bringing new vitality to these craft villages.

The application of modern technology and equipment in production helps the fine art wood products of Tuoi Thuan Woodworking Workshop in Yen Lac commune maintain a strong position in the market.

In Yen Phuong commune, formerly Yen Lac district, the working atmosphere in Lung Ha carpentry village remains as vibrant as ever. Despite numerous changes, the carpentry craft here remains strong and continues to develop. What sets it apart is the innovative spirit of the craftsmen – the "artisans of the digital age." They are not only skilled but also quick to adapt to consumer trends and promote their products online.

Among them, the Tuoi Thuan woodworking facility is a prime example. In 2024, three products – a jackfruit wood scroll, a jackfruit wood altar, and a four-season painting made of rosewood – were recognized as achieving OCOP 3-star provincial standards. This is not only a source of pride for the owner but also a testament to the development of the Lung Ha craft village in the digital age.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuan, the owner of the establishment, shared that today's success comes from persistently combining tradition and modernity. "We prioritize quality and reputation, while proactively applying new technologies, from designing models and precisely cutting with CNC machines to promoting products through platforms like Facebook, Zalo, and TikTok. As a result, we've gained more customer awareness, increased orders, and a stronger brand."

Ly Nhan blacksmith village affirms its brand through meticulous attention to detail in every step of the process.

Not only carpentry, but many other traditional craft villages in the province are also witnessing a "awakening" thanks to technology. In Vinh Phu commune - home to five traditional craft villages such as Ban Mach blacksmithing, Van Giang, Van Ha, Thu Do and Bich Chu carpentry - the atmosphere of production is bustling day and night like never before. Nearly 2,000 households and production facilities are providing stable jobs for more than 3,700 workers.

A prime example is the Youth Blacksmithing Cooperative, one of the pioneering units in introducing technology into production. Instead of using traditional charcoal kilns, the cooperative has invested in a high-frequency furnace system and modern LRam machines, optimizing costs, increasing productivity, and minimizing environmental pollution.

In addition, to maintain and expand the supply chain, the cooperative quickly implemented online sales channels. They regularly livestream sales, record product introduction videos, and close deals directly on Facebook, Shopee, and TikTok Shop. All these methods, seemingly only suitable for urban youth, have now become powerful tools for these blacksmiths in the countryside.

With the application of science and technology in production, the products of Ly Nhan blacksmith village are becoming increasingly well-known, trusted, and used by many people.

Mr. Phung Van Do, Director of the Cooperative, said: “Thanks to the application of technology, our forged knives are not only beautiful and sharp but also have a place in the nationwide market. The cooperative's 8-piece kitchen knife set was recognized as a typical rural industrial product at the provincial level in 2021, the Northern region in 2022, and the national level in 2023. Currently, the cooperative provides stable employment for 10 local workers, and their income is steadily improving.”

It can be said that technology is opening up new avenues for development for traditional craft villages in Phu Tho. Through social media, customers from all regions can see products, place orders, and provide feedback immediately.

Building on these achievements, in the coming period, Phu Tho province aims to continue supporting craft villages in investing in technological innovation, expanding production linked with experiential tourism, and building regional brands. In particular, training programs on e-commerce, digital marketing skills, product photography and videography will be intensified, helping craft workers easily access and apply these skills in practice, thereby further expanding domestic and international markets through technology.
