In the mountainous districts of Quang Nam province, thanks to the effective implementation of state policies for ethnic minorities, many poor and near-poor households have been able to live in new, spacious, clean and beautiful houses.

We recently returned to Song Kon commune, Dong Giang district, to visit several households that received housing support in 2024. Before us were numerous new houses that had sprung up. Through conversations with the residents, we learned that hundreds of households also received livelihood support to help them escape poverty.
Mr. Arat Trung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Song Kon commune, said: "In recent years, thanks to many support policies, especially resources from national target programs, the lives of the Co Tu people in the locality have developed increasingly. The most noticeable thing is that a series of new houses have been built, and hundreds of households have received livelihood support to rise out of poverty."

According to Mr. Trung, during the recent Tet holiday, many Co Tu ethnic minority households were able to live in spacious and sturdy houses, which made the people very happy. To date, nearly 250 households in the commune have received support for housing and land, with amounts ranging from 60 to 80 million VND per household. In the final phase of 2024 alone, 50 households moved into their new homes in time for the Lunar New Year. The people no longer worry about unpredictable winds, storms, and floods like in previous years.
Mr. Alang Lien from Blo Ben village said: “My wife and I used to be a poor household, relying only on farming and doing odd jobs to earn money to raise our children. Even now, I still can't believe that my wife and I have such a beautiful house. I am very grateful to the government for supporting us to have this new home.”
Specifically, Mr. Lien received 80 million VND in government assistance, along with approximately 100 million VND in borrowed money and his savings. Together with his wife, they built a house nearly 100 square meters in size, costing almost 400 million VND. This is their first Tet (Lunar New Year) in their dream home, so the couple is very happy.
Not far away is the newly built, neat, and sturdy house of Mr. Alang Noc (born in 1976). Mr. and Mrs. Noc mainly work in the fields, and Mr. Noc is frequently ill, so his work depends on his wife, making life difficult. Recently, he received government assistance to build a solid house, which made him very happy.

“My house used to be just a few wooden planks with an old corrugated iron roof, in very poor condition. With government support, along with my savings and borrowed money, I was able to build a new house of over 70 square meters, next to the old one. This past Tet holiday, we were all very happy to be in our new house. I will try my best to work hard to escape poverty,” Mr. Nóc said emotionally.
Recently, thanks to the intensified implementation of national target programs and economic development policies for ethnic minority areas, the lives of the Co Tu people in the mountainous districts of Quang Nam province have improved significantly. To date, hundreds of poor and near-poor households in each district have stable housing and have moved into new, sturdy homes.
Mr. Pham Sau, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dang commune, Tay Giang district, said: "Thanks to policies from the central, provincial, and district levels, many households have received support for housing and production livelihoods. Having new houses to live in before the recent Lunar New Year, the people are very happy. Furthermore, all levels of government have continuously implemented livelihood models, thereby supporting households to settle down and make a living."

Ms. Radel Ban (60 years old) from Dang commune said that her old house was made of scrap wood. The government provided 80 million VND to build a new house, and her children, grandchildren, and neighbors helped with the labor so that the new house could be completed in time for Tet (Lunar New Year). Similarly, Mr. Radel Bon, a poor household in the commune, shared: “We are very happy to receive government support for building a house. In October 2024, with the 60 million VND in support and some borrowed money, I was able to build a new house worth about 120 million VND. Having a new house to live in this past Tet, and not having to worry about the rainy season next year, what could be better?”
In A Tieng commune, thanks to resources from programs and policies for ethnic minority areas, people's lives have improved significantly over the past year, and the poverty rate has decreased. Specifically in 2024, funding from national target programs and provincial, district, and local policies provided housing support to over 70 poor households. The people are very pleased.
“The greatest joy for everyone was that during the recent Lunar New Year, many households were able to move into new homes. Besides housing support, people were also given livelihoods to escape poverty. The commune provided 37 households with breeding cows, two cows per household, and tens of thousands of cinnamon trees through value chain production development and community production support,” added Mr. Pơloong Acông – Chairman of the People's Committee of A Tiêng commune.
