Explosion at Dung Quat shipyard, 9 people injured

In Quang Ngai, factory workers in the Dung Quat Economic Zone were repairing a ship when sparks from welding and cutting ignited a fuel leak, causing a fire and explosion that burned nine people on the afternoon of November 3rd.

Around 2 PM, a group of workers from the pipe workshop of Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company in Binh Son district were welding and cutting at the bottom of the pump room of the Legend ship when a fire and explosion occurred. The fire flared up fiercely, and some workers in the void tank were unable to escape.

Nine workers with burns were transferred to Quang Nam Central General Hospital in Nui Thanh district, 40 km from the accident site. The hospital reported that upon arrival, three had severe burns, and six had less severe burns. All victims were subsequently transferred to a hospital in Da Nang.

Dr. Le Van Muoi, head of the on-call team at Da Nang Hospital, said that three people with severe burns covering 70-80% of their bodies were transferred to the intensive care unit. One case involved both burns and compartment syndrome (edema), requiring the mobilization of the surgical team to coordinate with burn doctors. The remaining victims, with burns ranging from 5-70% of their body surface area, were transferred to the Burn Surgery Department.

Mr. Huynh Tan Binh, Head of the Safety, Health and Environment Department (Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company), stated that the initial cause was a leak in the oil pipeline valve into the empty tank. At that time, workers were welding and cutting, generating sparks that came into contact with the fuel, causing the incident.

The Dung Quat Economic Zone has requested the company to provide a detailed report on the incident and will soon form an inspection team to visit construction sites and factories within the economic zone.

Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company was established in 2006, formerly part of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, specializing in shipbuilding and repair. In 2010, the company was transferred to the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group.
