Long Son is an island commune under Vung Tau City (Ba Ria - Vung Tau) with an area of about 90km2, surrounded by canals and rivers, Long Son island commune has a particularly important position in both national defense, security and socio -economic fields. Taking advantage of that advantage, in recent times, Long Son commune has mobilized all resources, especially resources from the people to invest in production development, increase income, and sustainably reduce poverty.

Specifically, with the advantage of having a large water surface area, suitable for aquaculture, in recent years, in addition to implementing many policies to help people access capital and techniques to develop the aquaculture industry, Long Son commune has also focused on promoting and guiding people to apply science and technology in production to bring high economic efficiency and protect the environment such as: Raising Thai Duong oysters on bamboo substrates instead of cement roofing sheets or rubber tires; raising fish with Norwegian technology plastic round cages; dyeing anti-fouling nets; making roofs to reduce temperature; installing automatic water surface monitoring systems...

Up to now, the commune has more than 420 hectares of aquaculture area, including 100 hectares of oyster farming area with nearly 600 farming households, 40 hectares of cage fish farming area with over 250 farming households... Thanks to support in investment in science and technology, training in cultivation and production, the output of species reaches about 4,200 tons/year, at the same time creating regular jobs for over 2,000 local workers.
Having been involved in aquaculture on Cha Va River, Long Son Commune for many years, Mr. Vo Thanh Thuan said that after the local authorities created conditions for him to participate in aquaculture training courses, and sent staff to monitor, advise, and provide technical guidance, his family's aquaculture has been very favorable, bringing in a stable annual income.

Mr. Tran Quang Phong (Long Son commune, Vung Tau city) happily shared: Thanks to receiving preferential capital from the locality, I have boldly invested in raising marine fish on Cha Va river in a scientific and environmentally friendly direction. Accordingly, I have applied the solution of dyeing anti-fouling nets to keep the water environment in the fish farming area clean, limiting the risk of pollution and disease, raising fish with good resistance and growing faster, bringing high yield, this helps the family to escape poverty.

Serving sustainable poverty reduction

Mr. Ngo Van Qua, Vice Chairman of Long Son Commune People's Committee, said: Determining the important goal of poverty reduction is to be sustainable, therefore, in recent times, Long Son Commune has always focused on doing a good job of investigation and survey to correctly identify poor and near-poor households and have timely support solutions. According to the investigation, the main cause of poverty is that people lack capital, lack of production experience, do not have stable jobs, and do not have the awareness to escape poverty. Some families are still poor due to illness, disease, etc.

From that reality, Long Son commune has proactively and synchronously implemented many basic solutions to help the poor escape poverty quickly and sustainably, increase income to become well-off households. Up to now, the average income per capita has reached more than 60 million VND/year, an increase of nearly 18 million compared to the beginning of 2020. The whole commune has only 0.75% of poor households. The employment rate is over 91%. Essential infrastructure works are focused on investment and construction; the appearance of the countryside has improved a lot. The quality of life of the people has been gradually improved. Political security, social order and safety are stable, creating peace of mind for people working in production.

Mr. Ngo Van Qua, Vice Chairman of Long Son Commune People's Committee, said that with the achieved results, the aquaculture industry of Long Son commune in recent times has not only provided a stable source of raw materials for seafood export, creating an economic breakthrough for the locality but also contributed to increasing income, improving people's lives, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction and moving towards the goal of achieving advanced new rural standards in 2023.

Accordingly, in order to continue to exploit and effectively promote the potential and advantages of water resources to boost local socio-economic development, in the coming time, Long Son commune will continue to coordinate with functional agencies to review land funds and stable water surfaces to continue attracting businesses and people to invest in aquaculture in the area. At the same time, tighten the management and licensing of aquaculture at sea; gradually eliminate locations and farming areas that are not in accordance with planning; encourage facilities and farmers to use environmentally friendly materials, increase product value, and aim to serve processing and export...

In addition, Long Son commune will strengthen coordination with functional units, focus on providing technical guidance on aquaculture, replicating highly effective aquaculture models, creating sustainable livelihoods for people. In particular, the commune continues to promote propaganda and mobilize people to comply with and comply with regulations on environmental protection and water resource protection in aquaculture according to regulations.
