According to Box Office Vietnam, the film "Tunnels: The Sun in the Darkness" reached 50 billion VND in revenue on the afternoon of April 6th, after 3 days of release.
With this revenue growth rate, "The Tunnel" could be the next Vietnamese film to join the list of films grossing over 100 billion VND this year.
Right from the first screenings, "Tunnels" received positive feedback. Audiences and experts expressed their emotions when watching such a realistic and engaging Vietnam war film by a Vietnamese director.
People's Artist Xuan Bac, Director of the Department of Performing Arts, assessed "The Underground Tunnel" as a film worth watching: "Films like 'Tunnels: Sun in the Dark' are necessary because of their educational spirit, especially on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification."
"We clearly see revolutionary heroism, patriotism, willingness to sacrifice but always yearning for love inside each soldier. I hope the audience will not miss this film, especially the young people," said People's Artist Xuan Bac.
Director Huu Tuan affirmed that "Tunnel" is a film that has almost reached the perfection of a war film. He confidently said that the film can completely become a candidate for the Oscar in the category "Best Foreign Language Film" in 2026.
"Tunnel: Sun in the Dark" is the latest work conceived over a decade ago by director Bui Thac Chuyen. This film is also part of a series of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification.
With "Tunnels: Sun in the Dark", for the first time the war and daily life of guerrillas in the Cu Chi tunnels are recreated realistically and vividly.
The film is set in 1967, when the Vietnam War was becoming increasingly fierce. The 21-man guerrilla team led by Bay Theo (played by Thai Hoa) at Binh An Dong base became the US military's number 1 search and destroy target.
The guerrillas were tasked with protecting a new strategic intelligence group that had taken refuge at the base at all costs. Their radio communications with the intelligence group were detected and located by the US military, depriving the guerrillas of their only advantage of invisibility in the vast, complex, and mysterious tunnel system.
In addition, the film also tells a story intertwined with the camaraderie, love and desire to live of the soldiers, but above all, the spirit of sacrifice for the Fatherland, such as the love story between guerrilla Ba Huong (played by Ho Thu Anh) and Tu Dap (played by Quang Tuan) which is realistically recreated during wartime.
