Promoting tourism through cinema is a popular trend and in fact many countries in the world as well as some localities in the country have been successful. Ha Tinh has many advantages and potentials but currently, this method has not been exploited.
Vu Quang National Park ( Ha Tinh ) is an ideal setting for making films and television shows.
Attracting audiences thanks to the movie setting
Recently, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Tinh organized a delegation to visit and survey tourism models in the two provinces of Phu Yen and Binh Dinh. With the desire to study and learn from the experience of building and operating successful tourism models and products of other provinces, the delegation visited and surveyed many famous locations, including destinations that were the setting for the popular movie "I see yellow flowers on green grass" by director Victor Vu.
Mr. Cao Thai Hoang - a tour guide assigned by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Phu Yen province to lead the survey team said: "Since 2015, after the film "I see yellow flowers on the green grass" by director Victor Vu was released, the attraction of tourists to destinations in Phu Yen has increased. Not only attracting tourists, but there are also places that were previously just a field of grass, wilderness, now attracting businesses to invest in building attractive tourist destinations."
A delegation from Ha Tinh Tourism Department visited and surveyed Bai Mon - Mui Dien scenic spot (Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen) in mid-November 2023.
According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Phu Yen, the total number of tourists to this province in 2013 reached 703 thousand, by 2018 it reached nearly 1.6 million and in 11 months of 2023 it reached nearly 3 million. Achieving these successes is thanks to the Phu Yen tourism industry constantly finding new directions for development, one of which is "taking advantage" of the effect from the film adapted from the work of writer Nguyen Nhat Anh to promote the image and build products to attract tourists.
Phu Yen is not the only one promoting tourism through film and television. Remember, after the Hollywood movie “Kong: Skull Island” was released, filming locations in Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh, and Quang Binh also became destinations attracting millions of visitors. In particular, the movie also promoted famous landscapes such as Trang An (Ninh Binh), Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh), and Phong Nha - Ke Bang (Quang Binh) to international tourists.
Bai Xep (Phu Yen) is an attractive destination for tourists thanks to its appearance in the movie "I see yellow flowers on green grass".
In fact, in many countries, through cinema, tourist destinations have also become more famous. Typical examples include: Jeju Island, a village in Taean County, Chungcheongnam Province (South Korea) through the films “Winter Sonata”, “Crash Landing on You”; or recently, the setting of Lijiang Ancient Town in Yunnan Province (China) has become an attractive destination for Asian tourists thanks to the film “Going Where the Wind Blows”...
Ha Tinh - fertile land of film studios
Compared to many localities in the country, Ha Tinh has many relics and scenic spots that are not inferior to other provinces. Even with the diversity of geography, natural climate, rivers, beaches..., many destinations in Ha Tinh are more beautiful than many scenes in famous movies, loved by audiences. Typical of the majestic natural landscape of mountains, forests, rivers, we have Vu Quang National Park, Ke Go Lake. Regarding the scenery along the 137km long coastline, Ha Tinh has many beaches from pristine rocky beaches to modern gently sloping fine sand, clear water, many ancient fishing villages. Regarding scenic spots, there is Hong Linh mountain with Huong Tich pagoda, Dong Loc T-junction...
The beauty of the Ngan Pho River (Huong Son).
Mr. Nguyen Trung Duc - Director of Hello Trip Vietnam Co., Ltd., a member of the Ha Tinh delegation who recently visited and surveyed tourism in Phu Yen and Binh Dinh provinces, said: "Speaking of the beauty and uniqueness of the landscape, the scenes in the movie "I see yellow flowers on green grass" can be found in Ha Tinh quite a lot. Even Cam Linh beach (Cam Xuyen), Lai beach - Ky Xuan (Ky Anh district) are more beautiful and unique than the scenes we see in the above movies. However, what we lack is a story attached to that landscape. The reason Phu Yen can do it is because they know how to take advantage of the opportunity to promote as well as build tourism products after the success of the movie".
In fact, with diverse landscapes from forests to seas, many historical sites, Ha Tinh has been the setting for many famous films that have attracted many audiences such as: Dong Loc Intersection, Sand Shield Forest, Lost Cuckoo, Red Dawn, Great Poet Nguyen Du...
A scene from the movie "Great Poet Nguyen Du" was filmed in Dau Lieu ward (Hong Linh town).
Director Nguyen Danh Dung, who is famous for his popular films on VTV prime time such as: The Judge, The Taste of Love... has had two films that chose to film in Ha Tinh and created a buzz: Sand-Covering Forest (2011) and Lost Tu Hu (2013). He once shared that Ha Tinh has many beautiful settings and he always wishes to have a suitable script to film here.
As for Dr. Pham Xuan Mung, the person who made the film Great Poet Nguyen Du, he said that the people of Ha Tinh are simple and always enthusiastically support the film crew during the production process. Besides the beautiful scenery, finding extras is very easy, because Ha Tinh has many folk singing clubs, many people are familiar with acting...

Although there is a lot of potential and many film crews have chosen Ha Tinh as the setting for famous films, after these films, the authorities, sectors and localities have not paid attention to promoting the local image with the purpose of developing tourism. A typical example is the film "Sand Shielding Forest" broadcast on prime time VTV1 in 2011. In addition to the attractive story, the audience was still impressed with the scenery in Truong Vun - Thinh Loc commune (Loc Ha). If there is a sense of tourism development, after the film is broadcast, this place can also be built into an attractive destination.

To take advantage of promoting tourism through cinema, the first thing is to invite film crews to the homeland of Hong Mountain and La River. To do that, there must be specific attraction policies. Many provinces and cities in the country have implemented this. For example, at the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival hosted by Da Lat City (Lam Dong) which took place a few days ago, the province had a program introducing the landscape and policies to invite film crews to film in the foggy city. In addition, for the first time at a Vietnamese film festival, Lam Dong province has awarded an award category to a film with excellent scenes shot locally, "Em va Trinh".

Mr. Thai Van Sinh - Deputy Head of the Culture - Social Committee of the People's Council of Ha Tinh province expressed: "Promoting tourism through cinema is a popular and effective trend in the world today. With a poetic natural resource of all kinds of mountains, forests, rivers, streams, waterfalls, seas, lakes... and many cultural sediments, it is clear that promoting tourism through cinema is an inevitable direction of Ha Tinh tourism. When considering this as a strategic direction, it is necessary to have specific policies for film crews to invite and create the most favorable conditions for them to work.
In addition to supporting material conditions, it is very important to send people who have in-depth knowledge of the local landscapes to accompany the film crews to choose the best filming locations for promoting the image. However, it is worth noting that there needs to be special connections and attention with directors, film crews, and producers of high caliber. There must be a point of view that promoting tourism through films is much cheaper and more effective than other forms of promotion when we work with film crews.
A scene of the movie "Great Poet Nguyen Du" was made in Nghi Xuan.
Ha Tinh has all the elements and potential to become a film set for attractive films, thereby promoting local tourism. However, what is necessary and sufficient is determination and appropriate, selective policies and strategies to turn potential into reality.
