This year, more than 1.16 million candidates are taking the high school graduation exam. Of these, nearly 98% are taking the exam under the 2018 General Education Program; the remaining more than 2% are taking the exam under the 2006 General Education Program.
Candidates studying the 2018 program take four subjects: two compulsory subjects (Mathematics and Literature) and two elective subjects from the following: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economics & Law Education, Informatics, and Technology.
Candidates in the 2006 program take three compulsory subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language, plus a combined test in either Natural Sciences or Social Sciences.
According to Master Nguyen Phuoc Bao Khoi, a lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the 2025 high school graduation exam in Literature reflects the realities of life, closely linked to the current situation of the country, both awakening a sense of appreciation for the past and inspiring a sense of responsibility for the nation's transformations.
Furthermore, the exam effectively aligns with the competency-based development guidelines of the 2018 Literature curriculum and has a high degree of differentiation. The Reading Comprehension section uses an excerpt from a short story by Nguyen Minh Chau, a prominent writer known for his philosophical narrative style. The literary analysis essay section provides a subtle "escape route" for students. Identifying the central and supporting arguments in the social commentary section is challenging, but students can easily overcome it by adhering to the text and effectively utilizing the answers provided in the reading comprehension questions.
