On July 29, FV Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City announced that it had combined vascular embolization techniques with the Navigation neuronavigation system and the ultrasonic tumor ablation system to successfully perform surgery on a patient with a large brain tumor. The patient recovered just 2 hours after surgery.
Previously, Ms. Trinh Nhat Khanh (45 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) occasionally had mild headaches and decided to go for a stroke screening at FV Hospital.
MRI scan results showed that Ms. Khanh had a very large meningioma, more than 6cm in diameter, the size of an orange, compressing nearly 1/4 of her brain.
Doctor Tran Luong Anh, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery, FV Hospital, said that the tumor develops over a long period of time, the skull adapts to the tumor so it is difficult to detect.

Although the patient occasionally suffered from headaches, fortunately, the tumor had not affected higher neurological functions. However, this case required early surgical removal of the tumor, because if the tumor grew larger, it could cause dangerous complications such as epilepsy or even directly threaten the patient's life.
After consultation, the doctors decided to operate on the patient, however, the patient faced risks such as: the tumor was large and hard, so removing it could cause damage to the surrounding brain tissue. In addition, this tumor was nourished by many blood vessels, so the risk of heavy blood loss during surgery was very high.
To minimize blood loss during surgery and preserve blood vessels, doctors performed an embolization procedure to block the tumor's blood supply the day before surgery. The next day, under the guidance of a neural navigation system, doctors approached the tumor.
This system helps to accurately determine the tumor boundaries, optimize the surgical path so that it is not too large or too small, thereby reducing the surgical time and related risks. Navigation also helps to identify and preserve the blood vessels adjacent to the tumor.
Along with that, the surgery also has the effective support of the ultrasonic tumor cutting and burning system to solve the problem of tumor hardness. According to Dr. Tran Luong Anh, with large and hard tumors, removing the tumor manually can cause damage to the surrounding brain tissue. The ultrasonic cutting and burning machine helps remove the tumor without having to move much, minimizing the impact on brain tissue and protecting the surrounding blood vessels.
The multi-method surgery was successfully performed after 4 hours. The tumor was separated and removed from the patient's brain without causing damage to the surrounding brain tissue, the amount of bleeding during surgery was very little, the surgery time was shortened, and the patient recovered spectacularly just 2 hours after surgery.
Four days after the surgery, the patient’s health has returned to 90% of normal. Fortunately, the pathology results showed that the tumor was benign and the patient will be discharged from the hospital in the near future and return to normal life./.
