Quang Tri: Container driver opened the barrier to cross the overflow bridge, was swept away by flood and went missing

Due to the strong flood water from upstream, when the car was halfway across the road, the front of the car was swept away by the flood towards the cliff. At this time, the driver climbed onto the side of the car to wait for rescue, but the high water caused the car to flip over, and the driver was swept away.

A container truck attempted to cross a flooded underpass, but the driver was swept away by the floodwaters and is now missing.

On the afternoon of November 17th, the People's Committee of La Lay commune, Quang Tri province, announced that they are coordinating with functional forces and local people to search for the container truck driver who was swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross a flooded ford during high water levels.

According to initial information, at approximately 12:00 PM on the same day, an unidentified container truck (driver's identity unknown) was traveling from National Highway 15 towards National Highway 9, heading from the La Lay border gate.

While the officers at the checkpoint were having lunch nearby, the driver arbitrarily opened the barrier to cross the A Rông Trên overflow bridge (La Lay intersection).

However, due to the strong current of floodwaters from upstream, when the container truck was halfway across the river, the front of the vehicle was swept away towards the ravine. At this point, the driver climbed out of the cabin onto the side of the truck to wait for rescue.

While rescue efforts were underway, rising floodwaters caused the vehicle to overturn, and the driver went missing.

Authorities are continuing the search operation; however, heavy rain and rising floodwaters are making the search difficult.

According to the Quang Tri Provincial Civil Defense Command, in the past 12 hours, many areas in the province experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall, including Ta Rut (541mm), Dakrong (379mm), Khe Sanh (372.8mm), Huong Phung (273mm), Tan Lap (193mm), Huong Lap (181mm), Lao Bao (163mm), and La Lay (160mm).

As of 11:30 AM on November 17th, heavy rains had caused flooding and road closures in 3 areas; 190 households with 644 people were affected by flooding; 5 landslides occurred; 3 schools were closed; and more than 4,490 households lost power.

Local authorities have evacuated 217 households with 813 people. Floods on rivers in Quang Tri continue to rise, posing a very high risk of widespread flooding and landslides...
