Kyodo News, citing Japanese police, reported that four passengers, including a baby, suffered burns and injuries after coming into contact with a liquid chemical that accidentally leaked from another passenger. The incident occurred on the Shinkansen bullet train.
Four passengers suffered burns while two others experienced discomfort after inhaling fumes from a chemical leak on the ship.
Investigators are working with the owner of the bag containing the chemicals, one of the injured. The 40-year-old man is an employee of a geological survey company in Tokyo, and police believe that the industrial chemicals used for his work were stored in a container in his handbag and accidentally leaked.
The Sendai city fire department announced that they received a call from a passenger on train number 52, en route to Tokyo, at noon on October 9th. The passenger reported that someone had been burned after touching something that looked like a chemical. The train crew conducted an investigation and discovered smoke on board.
East Japan Railway, the train operator, said the emergency notification system was activated at 11:54 a.m. (local time), two minutes before the train arrived at Sendai station in Miyagi Prefecture in the northeast. All passengers were allowed to disembark at Sendai station.

In addition to those injured after exposure to the chemicals, two others felt unwell, possibly from inhaling fumes. However, authorities said no one was in life-threatening condition.
A passenger at Sendai station said the incident reminded him of the 1995 sarin gas attack in Japan, a terrorist attack that killed 14 people and injured more than 6,000. "It's terrifying because you can bring anything onto the train," the 52-year-old man said.
