The novel's release in Vietnam features translation by the author herself and translator Thien Nga, aiming to provide the most complete and accessible translation possible.
"Life in the Wind and Dust" is a bestselling novel internationally, winning numerous literary awards, translated into 14 languages (Italian, German, French, Dutch, Swedish, Spanish, Croatian, Finnish, Czech, Portuguese, Danish, Russian, Sri Lankan, and Vietnamese), and published in 20 countries. It will soon be released in five more languages: Macedonian, Serbian, Arabic, Indonesian, and Lithuanian.
"Life in the Wind and Dust" continues to tell the tragedies of war, the stories of insignificant people left behind by the tide of history, a major theme of modern Vietnamese literature.
Interweaving the past and present, with a captivating, moving, and poetic writing style, "Life in the Wind and Dust" is a story about hidden secrets and wounds that seem impossible to heal. But above all, it is a story about courage and resilience, about compassion and reconciliation, about the power of forgiveness and love.
The book was researched and written by author Nguyen Phan Que Mai over a period of seven years. The characters and plot are fictionalized from information gathered during the author's doctoral research project, as well as from her real-life experiences in connecting with and helping American veterans find their children.
Author Nguyen Phan Que Mai says that when she was a child, books were like boats that carried her from her impoverished countryside into the richness and vastness of the world .
"I've always dreamed of traveling the world through stories, and now it's an honor that my novels can reach places I've never had the chance to visit," the author shared.
The author confided that she took a great risk writing her two novels, "Nightingale" and "Life in the Wind and Dust," in English. Although she has published them in many languages, she is most nervous about the Vietnamese version of the novel, because Vietnamese is her homeland, her roots, the cradle that nurtured her growth and maturity.

Born in Ninh Binh and raised in Bac Lieu , Nguyen Phan Que Mai is currently one of the most prominent Vietnamese writers on the international literary scene.
As a writer, poet, journalist, and translator, she writes in both Vietnamese and English and is the author of 13 books. Nguyen Phan Que Mai's literary works have been translated into 25 languages and have received numerous literary awards both domestically and internationally.
She also received first prize in the "Poetry about Hanoi " competition, the Hanoi Writers Association Award, and the Hanoi Union of Literature and Arts Award.
In 2021, Nguyen Phan Que Mai was honored by Forbes Vietnam as one of the 20 most inspiring women. The female writer holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University, UK.
