Heartwarming gifts at Hai Duong Psychiatric Hospital

Established in 2018 in Bac Thanh Mien commune, the "One Heart" volunteer group was founded with a simple yet humane goal: to bridge the gap between generous donors and those in need in the community. "Giving when you can" has always been the guiding principle in all of the group's activities.

One of the group's most notable and lasting activities is providing free meals to patients at Hai Duong Psychiatric Hospital. This activity takes place regularly on weekends each month. From just a few dozen loaves of bread in the beginning, the group has now expanded to hundreds of packages containing bread, tea, porridge, sticky rice, etc., delivered directly to patients, many of whom have no family and live in the hospital for extended periods. Particularly during Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), hundreds of sticky rice cakes (banh chung) are handmade by the group members and sent to the patients there.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, from Gia Loc commune, a relative of a patient at Hai Duong Psychiatric Hospital, said that the small meals brought great joy. "Thanks to the 'One Heart' volunteer group, my father and I, as well as many other patients and their families, feel warm and less lonely," Ms. Lan said.

Ms. Vu Thi Nu, head of the "One Heart" volunteer group, said that activities at the hospital have been maintained for a long time and are the group's main charitable program. Each gift, though small, carries a message of love, helping to encourage family members and patients to overcome difficult times and feel more secure knowing that many people care and support them.

Enduring through all storms and floods.

Not only are they deeply connected to their local communities, the "One Heart" volunteer group also consists of familiar faces in areas severely affected by natural disasters, from the Northwest to the Central and Central Highlands regions.

Each trip is usually organized by the group after the floods recede, when people return home facing numerous difficulties and trying to restore their livelihoods. This is a period when people need a great deal of support. Traveling to areas heavily affected by natural disasters from Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Cao Bang to some provinces in Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands, the group provides each family with essential gifts, from rice, salt, blankets, household items to seeds, to help them with farming and restoring production. These trips often last several days, with the participation of group members and generous benefactors.

In a thank-you letter to the "One Heart" volunteer group in Hoa An commune, Cao Bang province, at the end of October 2025, Mr. Dam The Trang, Chairman of the Hoa An Commune People's Committee, on behalf of the local government and people, expressed gratitude for the group's gifts. This practical support not only helped many families overcome immediate difficulties but also instilled hope and stabilized their livelihoods.

Each charitable mission is meticulously prepared by the group, taking into account the actual needs of the people. The greatest joy is seeing the people stabilize and improve their lives. That is the reason why the group has persevered for over 7 years.

Besides maintaining its volunteer program at hospitals and in flood-affected areas, the group also carries out many activities aimed at helping people in particularly difficult circumstances both within and outside the city. In Bac Thanh Mien commune, the group supported Ms. Tran Thi Men and her family in overcoming strokes and illnesses, connecting them with both material and emotional assistance.

In Dong Nai, the group continues to distribute sticky rice and bread to homeless people, the destitute, poor laborers, lottery ticket sellers, and scrap collectors. One of the locations in Dong Nai that the group pays special attention to is the Phan Sinh Shelter, which is currently caring for more than 350 patients with mental illness and paralysis. The group regularly donates hundreds of kilograms of rice, diapers, and other necessities, helping to reduce the financial burden on the facility and bringing joy to the lonely patients.

The group also places special emphasis on transparency and public disclosure of charitable funds donated by benefactors. A complete list of donations, support items, and recipients is updated in detail on the group's page, allowing donors to track and monitor the process. This approach has earned the group the trust and support of many organizations and individuals both domestically and internationally.

“We do volunteer work not to gain recognition, but to spread love. Every gift, every small act, is a genuine act of sharing, reaching the right people and meeting their needs. This helps the group maintain the trust of benefactors, expand our activities, and reach out to all regions of the country, not just in Hai Phong,” Ms. Nu shared.

After more than 7 years of operation, the "One Heart" volunteer group has become a shining example in the voluntary charity movement in the western Hai Phong area. The group chooses to persistently help through practical actions, without fanfare or ostentation, but with powerful impact and widespread influence. On each trip, what the group receives in return is not the monetary contributions, but the smiles of flood victims receiving bags of seeds, the grateful eyes of patients receiving warm loaves of bread, or the warm handshakes of lonely elderly people at shelters...
