The Ferrari 250 GTO supercar on display in New York.
Fortune magazine reported on November 14th that a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO supercar was sold for $51.7 million (1.26 trillion VND) at an RM Sotheby's auction in New York (USA).
The bright red car was previously owned by an American collector for the past 38 years and holds the second-highest selling price in history. Prior to that, a Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe was sold in Germany for $144 million in 2022.
The 250 GTO was sold on the evening of November 13th (local time) after a few minutes of bidding, but still for a price lower than the expected price of over $60 million set by RM Sotheby's, the luxury car auction subsidiary of Sotheby's. The auction house did not disclose the buyer's identity.
According to RM Sotheby's, this legendary Scuderia sports car, which first appeared in 1962, has a 4-liter engine producing 390 horsepower.
This supercar finished second in the 1,000 km endurance race on the Nurburgring track in Germany. In the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, the team had to withdraw due to engine failure.
After several years of racing in Italy, the car was sold to the United States in the late 1960s. Restored and modified, the Ferrari 250 GTO changed hands several times in the US before falling into the hands of a collector in Ohio in 1985, who recently sold it at auction.
"This stunning Ferrari offers its next owner the pleasure of traveling and racing classic cars, or displaying it at major gatherings around the world ," according to Sotherby's.
