According to The Guardian , on December 2 (local time), the Winter Egg was sold for 30.2 million USD, breaking the world auction record for a Fabergé work. The previous record was set in 2007, when the Rothschild egg sold for 18.5 million USD.

Fabergé Easter eggs are highly sought after.

The Winter Egg was commissioned by Emperor Nicholas II in 1913 as an Easter gift for his mother and is one of the most lavish of Fabergé's royal creations.

Fabergé was one of the greatest Russian jewelers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His royal collection included gifts once owned by the Russian, Danish, and British royal families.

Carved from clear crystal, the inside depicts an icy design, and placed on a base that simulates melting ice, the egg is also decorated with more than 4,500 rose-cut diamonds, set in platinum snowflake motifs, and many other details.

Christie's auction house said this is the third time the Winter Egg has set a record. The egg has been sold many times due to its special history, attracting collectors.

After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the egg was moved from Saint Petersburg to the Kremlin arsenal in Moscow along with other valuable royal possessions.

In the 1920s, the Soviet government began selling off art treasures from the Hermitage Museum and other collections, often for a fraction of their true value. The egg was later acquired by London jeweler Wartski and sold to a British collector for £1,500 in 1934.

For two decades, from 1975 to 1994, the egg was lost, before being sold at Christie's for £6.8 million. Eight years later, in 2002, the auction house sold it again for £7.1 million.

"Christie's is honored to be entrusted with the sale of Fabergé's stunning Winter Egg for the third time in our history," said Margo Oganesian, Head of Fabergé and Russian Art at Christie's.

Today's result sets a new world auction record for a Fabergé work, affirming the enduring importance of this masterpiece and celebrating the rarity and brilliance of one of Fabergé's most exquisite creations, both technically and artistically.
