Minimum steps for winter health care

Dr. Mohit Saran, consultant physician at Manipal Hospital Gurugram (India), said: Ideally, it is best to walk 10,000 steps a day, but on cold days, people should stay indoors and walk briskly or do yoga, because in winter, the temperature drops, the arteries contract, so the heart has to work harder to maintain blood circulation.

People often tend to be lazy to exercise in winter, experts advise that you can reduce the amount of exercise and should focus on activities such as brisk walking, indoor exercise or yoga.

Adequate physical activity helps promote a healthy gut, supporting overall health during the cold season.

You also need to take precautions during cold weather, Dr. Saran added. If it is very cold, wear more clothes to help retain body heat. Keep your feet warm, wear gloves and a hat to avoid heat loss.

Also, even if you don't feel thirsty, it's important to drink enough water, especially when exercising. Drinking warm liquids, like herbal tea, can help hydrate and warm your body.
