Sony is preparing to enter the 200MP camera sensor race for smartphones, marking the first time the Japanese brand has challenged Samsung's monopoly in this segment.

According to leaked information from Digital Chat Station (DCS), Sony's first 200MP sensor, named IMX09E, is expected to be commercially available in the Lytia LYT-900 series. This sensor has a 1/1.12-inch form factor, larger than Samsung's ISOCELL HP2 (1/1.4 inch), and features 0.7µm individual pixels, built on a 22nm process.
The highlight of this sensor lies in its Hybrid Frame HDR capability with an ultra-wide dynamic range exceeding 100dB, combined with significantly improved light sensitivity. Additionally, the sensor supports in-sensor optical zoom at 2x and 4x, resulting in virtually lossless image quality.

According to predictions, the IMX09E will appear in the upcoming flagship smartphones OPPO Find X9 Ultra and Vivo X300 Ultra. Some rumors suggested that Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra might also feature this sensor, but this information has now been refuted.
On the competitor's side, Samsung's current top-of-the-line 200MP sensor is the ISOCELL HP2, which debuted with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The HP2 has a 1/1.4-inch size, 0.6µm pixels, and integrates Smart-ISO Pro (iDCG) and Dual Slope Gain (DSG) technology to enhance light handling capabilities, but the company hasn't clearly stated the dynamic range in dB. Even the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra is predicted to continue using this type of sensor.
If the leaked information is accurate, in terms of specifications, Sony's 200MP sensor could offer a significant advantage thanks to its larger sensor size, promising sharper, more detailed images and superior light handling. However, its actual performance will need to be verified when the product is officially launched.
With Sony preparing to enter the market, Samsung may be forced to research and develop a new generation of 200MP sensors with larger sizes, possibly even reaching 1 inch, to maintain its leading position in the high-end smartphone market.
