VHO - Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Standing Vice Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee, said that the incident of encroachment causing damage to national treasures at Thai Hoa Palace is regrettable and has very serious consequences.

At noon on May 26th, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Standing Vice Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee, inspected the work of protecting historical relics and national treasures at the Hue Imperial Citadel Complex.
The delegation inspected security measures at Thai Hoa Palace in the Hue Imperial Citadel, where an incident occurred where tourists vandalized and damaged the left armrest of the Nguyen Dynasty's royal throne, a national treasure.
The Standing Vice Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee has directed the Hue Imperial Citadel Relics Conservation Center and related units to review the management and protection work and implement urgent solutions at key relic sites and areas displaying valuable artifacts.

Speaking to the press during an inspection at Thai Hoa Palace, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh stated that the damage to the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty's throne, was a regrettable incident with very serious consequences.
The People's Committee of Hue City reported the incident to the Government and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; and also requested relevant agencies to quickly propose solutions to better preserve valuable artifacts and national treasures in the area.
The city of Hue is conducting a reassessment of the situation, requiring a review and accountability assessment of each individual and organization. In particular, it aims to draw lessons learned and develop better plans for protecting national treasures, artifacts, and the overall historical sites.

The Standing Vice Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee stated that the Hue Imperial City Relics Conservation Center has been tasked with coordinating with the Department of Culture and Sports to develop plans for protecting national relics, treasures, and valuable artifacts in accordance with the law.
During an inspection of the display and protection of national artifacts and treasures at the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh also requested strengthened security measures and prevention of unexpected situations.
In addition to assigning and deploying appropriate personnel, it is necessary to strengthen the application of technology to preserve and ensure the absolute safety of historical relics and artifacts.

The People's Committee of Hue City also requested relevant units to strengthen professional training for security forces directly at historical and heritage sites.
At the same time, strengthen propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage people and communities to care for and work together to preserve and protect the precious national assets that exist in the area.

According to observations by reporters from the Culture Newspaper, a large number of domestic and international tourists visited Thai Hoa Palace and admired the treasures and artifacts displayed in the inner palace area.
Some tourists who were aware of the "incident" on May 24th expressed regret at not having the opportunity to admire the national treasure there.

Currently, the throne on display at the Thai Hoa Palace is a 2023 replica, scaled to the original. Previously, this replica throne was displayed in the Ngu Phung Pavilion - Ngo Mon Gate in Hue for tourists to visit.
Ms. Ha Thi Thuy Dung, a tourist from Phu Tho province visiting Hue's heritage sites during this time, shared: "Before entering Thai Hoa Palace, our group had heard information about someone entering and vandalizing the throne of the Nguyen dynasty kings, and we felt very sorry about it."
"This is a national treasure with immense cultural heritage value and also carries spiritual significance, so it needs to be protected more strictly," said tourist Ha Thi Thuy Dung.

Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Imperial City Relics Conservation Center, said: "Following the incident, we immediately implemented several urgent measures, while also developing sustainable, long-term solutions."
We have moved the original artifacts to the museum for preservation. A council will be established as per regulations to evaluate and propose preservation and handling plans. We are also coordinating with relevant agencies to implement modern technological solutions, provide training on various scenarios, and enhance support tools…
"The fact is that Thai Hoa Palace was already equipped with a surveillance camera system and intrusion alarm, but after this incident of damage to a national treasure, more fundamental and rigorous solutions will have to be implemented," said Mr. Hoang Viet Trung.

To date, Hue city has 14 artifacts/sets of artifacts, comprising 41 individual artifacts, recognized as national treasures. Specifically, at the historical sites within the Hue Imperial Citadel Complex, there are 12 artifacts/sets of artifacts, comprising 38 individual artifacts, that are national treasures.
At the Thai Hoa Palace historical site, in addition to the Nguyen Dynasty's throne, there is also a display of national treasures: a pair of dragon statues from the Thieu Tri era. This set of artifacts represents the pinnacle of integration, mimicking the shape of the "golden seals and imperial insignia" cast from the Minh Mang to the Thieu Tri eras, in the "dragon-wrapped" style.
