What did the author of "Say mot doi vi em" say when the song was labeled AI?

(Dan Tri) - Becoming a million-view song in a short time, “Say mot doi vi em” caused controversy when it was mistaken as an AI product. Author Huong My Bong spoke up to clarify the origin and ownership of the song.

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí05/12/2025

Say mot doi vi em quickly went beyond the scope of a new song to become a phenomenon, spreading from social networks to daily life.

The song appeared in coffee shops, restaurants, at friends' gatherings and spread strongly on TikTok with a series of million-view videos using the familiar chorus: "I'm drunk not because of alcohol, but because of you, I love you so much that I forget"...

Thanks to its catchy melody and emotional lyrics, the song attracted a large number of listeners right from its release, despite having no promotional campaign.

The song’s popularity continued to grow as a series of versions were uploaded to digital platforms. Notably, the version performed by AI (artificial intelligence technology) on Ken Quach’s channel, released on August 8, quickly surpassed 15 million views and became one of the most shared versions.

Singer Nguyen Vu also attracted more than 2.3 million views with his unique cover, while Phan Dinh Tung's version recorded nearly 1 million views.

Many artists such as Meritorious Artist Minh Thu, Ha Nhi or Anh Quan Idol continue to choose to perform it again, contributing to keeping the song's presence dense on social networks and performance stages, consolidating the position of Say mot doi vi em as one of the most prominent musical phenomena this year.

However, the widespread spread has created a long-lasting misunderstanding. Many audiences believe that Say Mot Doi Vi Em is a product composed by AI, especially when some artists and information sites post inaccurate data.

Faced with this confusion, author Huong My Bong (real name Nguyen Thi Huong Bong, living in Hanoi ) decided to speak up to clarify the origin and affirm ownership of the work.

Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Huong My Bong said she was really sad and hurt when the song was labeled as a product of artificial intelligence.

Say mot doi vi em was written by me during a period of great hurt but also full of love. Each verse bears the imprint of my memories and emotions. When I heard that the song was misunderstood as being created by AI, I felt like my brainchild had its soul taken away,” she said.

According to the author, AI only assisted in creating the recording after the song was completed, while the melody, spirit and story all came from her personal experience. Although she was afraid of noise, Huong My Bong said that speaking up was necessary when witnessing signs of work being exploited incorrectly and even people wanting to appropriate it. Some statements about the song being composed by AI made her even more worried.

“If I stay silent, people might assume that the song has no real author. I just want to protect my work in a transparent and legal manner,” she said.

Huong My Bong said that the first draft of Say Mot Doi Vi Em was created in April, handwritten and carefully kept, before being completed on May 16. The original title was Men Say and the first version was recorded by her in a female voice.

She clearly remembers the time she wrote the song was when she withdrew from the daily noise, trying to heal herself by facing her own loneliness. It was a special psychological period, when Huong My Bong slowed down to sort out the unfinished emotions in her heart.

“I often sit alone on the balcony, facing the loneliness of life. At that time, memories of a broken love come flooding back, it is the love with a younger man far away, never touched, never met, but deep enough to stay forever.

Because of fate, we could not be together. That first and only sisterly love was both sad and beautiful, and from those feelings I wrote the song "Ta sat with my own shadow. Telling a few sad stories that cannot be named", she shared.

Many details in the song directly reflect the author’s life. The line “drunk forever, hair also turns gray” was written when she entered her 40s, her hair had begun to turn gray. Or the line “heart, mend my wounds” was inspired by the image of a girl mending a broken heart after a breakup.

“No AI system can create associations that come from real experiences, such real, painful, and deep emotions. I am heartbroken when my brainchild is denied,” Huong My Bong confided.

The misunderstandings surrounding the song's ownership began when the video was released on Ken Quach's channel, when the first version had the AI Music Box logo and the names of two people: Ken Quach - Huong My Bong. This led many viewers to believe that the song was composed by AI or that Ken Quach was a co-author.

In fact, Ken Quach only took on the role of arranger and producer. He signed a document transferring all copyrights of the arrangement to Huong My Bong on September 11 and confirmed that he did not play the role of co-composer.

She also confirmed that the information that singer Nguyen Vu bought the exclusive rights to the song was incorrect. The agreement between the two parties only allowed him to release one MV within a year and up to now, she has not received any payment. If the singer wants to exploit it commercially or perform, he must ask for written permission.

However, Huong My Bong still sent thanks to the artists who performed the song in the past, and said that copyright management units will take necessary steps to protect rights according to the law.

“After all the debates, what I hope the audience understands most clearly is the true origin of the song. Say mot doi vi em is a real story, real emotions, written from the heart of an ordinary woman, not a product of a machine,” she said.

Although she is just an amateur composer, she said she always works seriously and respects the value of creative labor.

It is known that Huong My Bong currently lives and works in Hanoi. She revealed that she is still diligently composing whenever emotions come flooding back. Besides Say mot doi vi em, she has completed many songs about soldiers, love and the journey of single mothers, which are expected to be introduced one by one in the near future.

“I don’t dare to call myself a musician. I’m just telling my life story through melody and poetry,” Huong My Bong expressed.
